Weekly Roundup #43: Hot sauce and penguin parents

Weekly Roundup #43: Hot sauce and penguin parents

Reading

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J.K. Rowling. I feel like I need to reiterate every week how much I miss the original illustrations on the cover. I mean, I still own all my original copies, but it’s weird seeing these modern covers on Amazon.

C is for Corpse, Sue Grafton. I was at an old bookstore last weekend and picked up C through E of this series. I’ve read “B is for Burglar” before, but never “A is for Alibi”…hey, gotta take what you find in these old shops.

The Killers: How We Wrote ‘Mr. Brightside,’ Rolling Stone. The demo is a must-listen. So raw.

Drama at the Zoo! Gay Penguin Couple Briefly 'Kidnaps' Chick from Neglectful Parents, People.

Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Hot Sauce? Women’s Health. I read a piece about this on Refinery29, but it was exclusively about Sriracha, which I hate. Cholula, however, goes on evvvvverything I eat. I love all hot sauce (except Sriracha), but Cholula is my bae. Ok, SO, the good: boost metabolism, support immune system, heart healthy and may protect against some cancer cells. The bad: high salt content. Looks like I’ll be continuing to drench my burrito bowls in hot sauce! 🔥🤗

Sleep Strategies For The Constantly Drowsy, Into the Gloss. Ok, so I already take night showers because my hair takes waaay too long to dry, even with a blow dryer, and my mattress is larger than any I’ve ever slept on because it’s my boyfriend’s. However, I definitely need new pillowcases and I’ve been meaning to get a humidifier forever (already have the essential oils ready) and the one the author recommended is adorable.

Every Adult Should Have a Bedtime, The Cut. The author asks why anyone would choose to stay up past the time they would get a solid seven hours of sleep. Umm…have you heard of Netflix? Or HBOGo? Or Hulu? Yeah. That’s why. That’s my why, at least. I do have a bedtime of 11:30 though.

Juuls, Glossier, and thrift store clothes: 6 high schoolers on what they’re buying right now, Vox. Gotta admit, this was kinda fascinating.

Phish’s Mike Gordon Spotted Filming With Broad City’s Ilana Glazer Dressed In Meme’d All-White Outfit, Live for Live Music. I love this so much. What a perfect cameo to drop in the final season!

Ingestible Beauty Is Trending. Here’s What Dermatologists Really Think About It, PureWow. TLDR: they don’t work and sunscreen is queen (as I’ve been saying this whole time, babieesss!)

Now Damien Echols Will Teach You the Secrets of Magick, The New York Times.

Shia LaBeouf And FKA Twigs Are Reportedly Dating, Nylon. Wut. No, really. Wut.

Spotify Wants To Use Your DNA To Curate Playlists For You, Nylon. I just…I don’t know. It’s a partnership with Ancestry and, apparently, it’s supposed to “help users better understand their ethnic history through music, giving users the ability to input the different ethnicities and regions that comprise their heritage and then listen to the music from those places.”

Seal slaps kayaker with octopus in viral GoPro video, CBS. I can’t stop watching this video. 🐙

11 Million People Agree This Is The Best British Show In 10 Years & It’s Coming To Netflix, Refinery29. I’ll know what I’ll be adding to my ever-growing list.

Sunday Riley Launched a Subscription Box, and We’re All Splurging in the Name of Self-Care, PureWow. Ugh, gimmmeeeee!

Twitter Told Brie Larson to Smile More in ‘Captain Marvel’ & Her Response Deserves a Standing Ovation, PureWow. YES. GIRL.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Casts Ego Nwodim As Featured Player, Adds Four Writers, Deadline. Three cheers for more POC and female representation!

7-Year-Old Girl Belts Out National Anthem, Steals Show At MLS Match, NPR. What an inspiring CUTIE!

Parted Your Hair A Different Way? Your Device Might Not Unlock, The Wall Street Journal. Hahaha, and this is why I’m fine with my iPhone 7. I adore the last anecdote though.

Sales are booming at Manhattan typewriter store, mostly thanks to young people (and Tom Hanks), The Washington Post. Tom Hanks is adorable and I definitely wouldn’t mind a typewriter.

The Queen's Cousin Just Became the First Royal to Have a Same-Sex Wedding, Marie Claire. Daaww! 👨‍❤️‍👨🌈

Millennials — Especially Women — Have Caused the U.S. Divorce Rate to Plummet, New Study Says, People. Hey, our generation does some pretty great things sometimes. 😉

Panthers sign safety Eric Reid, one of first protestors who knelt with Colin Kaepernick, Yahoo Sports. ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼

Hannah Storm, Andrea Kremer Will Be 1st Female Duo to Call NFL Games, Bleacher Report. It’s sad that this is even news, but it’s awesome.

Distracted Boyfriend meme is sexist, rules Swedish ad watchdog, The Guardian. “ ‘The advertisement objectifies women,’ the ombudsman, RO, said. ‘It presents women as interchangeable items and suggests only their appearance is interesting…It also shows degrading stereotypical gender roles of both men and women and gives the impression men can change female partners as they change jobs.’ ” Admittedly, yes. But, also, I’m very much a feminist and this is simply an amusing meme. We have bigger things to worry about. Fix the big stuff and shit like this will follow.

Meghan Markle Closed Her Own Car Door at Her First Solo Event and Twitter Is Amazed, Harper’s Bazaar. This headline 😂 Ah, Meghan. Keepin’ it real.

Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford Duel With Tears and Fury, The New York Times. She never wanted to go public. Her bravery is astounding.

Padma Lakshmi: I Was Raped at 16 and I Kept Silent, The New York Times. This was beautifully written and I applaud Lakshmi’s bravery in discussing this traumatic event. “Now, 32 years after my rape, I am stating publicly what happened. I have nothing to gain by talking about this. But we all have a lot to lose if we put a time limit on telling the truth about sexual assault and if we hold on to the codes of silence that for generations have allowed men to hurt women with impunity.”

1,600 men voice support for Christine Blasey Ford in New York Times ad, The Guardian. I love this. What a wonderful twist on the 1991 Anita Hill ad.

Why thousands joined today's #BelieveSurvivors walkout in support of Brett Kavanaugh's accusers, CNBC. Because we need to acknowledge the bravery it takes to speak up and stop attacking victims for needing time.

Post-Weinstein, These Are the Powerful Men Facing Sexual Harassment Allegations, Glamour. This was a depressingly long, extremely long, list.

Alaska Senate votes in favor of native language emergency, AP. 20 recognized Native American languages are at risk of dying out “because the last remaining fluent speakers are dying of old age.”

Snapchat is testing a camera feature that lets you easily buy items from Amazon, The Verge. Good for Snapchat, they need the revenue ha, and this is pretty freaking cool.

Paralyzed patients walk again with help from pain stimulator, NBC. This is incredible! It has given people their lives back and encouraged hope. I only hope this can be used to treat patients more and more frequently, barring any negative side effects.

Flu season deaths top 80,000 last year, CDC says, CNN. It was the deadliest season in more than four decades and the first season to show high severity in all age groups. Get the fucking flu shot, people! I’m getting mine this Thursday. 180 children died last year. This is unacceptable. We all need to do our part to protect older adults, pregnant women, people with chronic conditions and children.

BØRNS Denies Sexual Misconduct Allegations Made By Multiple Fans, Nylon. If true, he groomed them and is disgusting.

Bill Cosby sentenced to 3 to 10 years in state prison, The Washington Post. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Justice prevailed. “The court saved two full rows in the packed courtroom for Cosby’s personal use — enough to hold at least 16 people. In the first row sat an attorney, two publicists and one old friend. The second row was empty.” Side note: Not sure why this was in the Style section…

Senate Democrats Investigate a New Allegation of Sexual Misconduct, from Brett Kavanaugh’s College Years, New Yorker. I hate this whole “why did she wait” bullshit with every one of these stories. There are so many possible reasons: she was traumatized, she didn’t think it was important before, she wanted to forget it, the list goes on and on. Also, “During his Senate confirmation hearings, Kavanaugh at one point ushered into the Senate hearing room a large group of school girls whose basketball games he had coached, showcasing his warm and supportive relationships with women.” What the fuck is this charade? 😂

What to expect from President Trump's week at the UN General Assembly, ABC. Shame, a massively undeserved and overstroked ego and, apparently, laughter.

World leaders stumble upon a potent response to Trump’s claims: Laughter, The Washington Post. You have to laugh or you might dissolve into a puddle of tears at the thought of this caricature of a man making decisions for you and future generations.

Rod Rosenstein Suggested Secretly Recording Trump and Discussed 25th Amendment, The New York Times. One, he’s kind of an idiot. Keep this shit confidential, man, and trust no one! Two, I really wish this had worked ha. Although, Pence would be worse so…let’s just fast forward through these next two hellish years.

Trump Administration Will Seek To Limit Green Cards For Immigrants Needing Public Aid, NPR. Ok, I do actually see the positives of this, but some of these things you can’t control. I mean, receiving aid from a prescription drug program for the elderly and disabled? We all know how obscenely expensive medication is in the US and people can’t help being elderly or disabled. So these people or those families with these individuals may not be able to stay in the country because of something they can’t control? That’s cruel. There needs to be compromise because I agree with the base idea, show you can live here without leaning on an already strained system. However, nearly the same percentage of immigrants benefit from public assistance as non-immigrants, so you can’t blame it all of this group of individuals.

Trump Accuses China Of Trying To Interfere In Midterm Elections, Citing Trade Dispute, NPR. Oh boy. “He offered no details or proof to support that assertion. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi — who seemed to be stifling a yawn as he sat nearby — was seen casting a sidelong glance at Trump and shrugging his shoulders.” Lol.

Women Are Not 'Chattel,' Says India's Supreme Court In Striking Down Adultery Law, NPR. India is really getting with the times lately.

Italian government approves Salvini bill targeting migrants, The Guardian. The power far-right, nationalist parties are gaining in Europe is terrifying. We’re going to end up repeating history and having a World War III if this continues…

Swedish Politics In Chaos As Parliament Votes Out Prime Minister, NPR. See above response to the Italian gov story…we’re headed toward frightening consequences.

EU sues Poland for undermining independence of courts, Reuters. And then Trump praised them at the UN General Assembly because he’s a genius who is very up to date on the news.

India’s Modi launches health insurance for 100 million families ahead of elections, Reuters. I mean, this sounds amazing, but let’s see how it all plays out.

Militants attack Iran military parade, killing at least 25, AP. It’s the deadliest terror attack in the country in nearly a decade with at least 25 people killed and over 60 wounded.

Listening

A-OK (Everything’s Perfect), Terror Jr. I can’t point to a single song of theirs I dislike and this one is no different. Realized September 28, it’s a response to the shitstorm we’re currently living in.

Jackie and Wilson, Hozier. Bf and I saw him last Tuesday and it has been a looong time coming. I’ve been trying to get tickets for him for every birthday, Christmas, anniversary as long as we’ve been together so to say we were pumped is an understatement. Also, to say Andrew Hozier-Byrne is incredible would also be an understatement. It was almost a spiritual experience seeing him (and the crazy talented band) live. Look for a review of his music in the near future.

Insecure Season 3 Soundtrack, HBO. GUYS. This show kiiiills it with their music choices. I finally got on my Insecure binge and have watched up to episode five of this latest season. Some of my top picks: Where the Bag At, City Girls; So Am I, Ty Dolla $ign ft. Damian Marley & Skrillex (aka bae); Cold War, Cautious Clay; Slip Away, Ill Camille ft. Amaru; Trap or Die, NSTASIA.

Guys We F****d, Sorry About Last Night. This is an anti-slut shaming podcast where the hosts, Corinne and Krystyna (yes, accurate spelling), openly, honestly and bluntly talk about their sex lives, preferences, histories, etc. Weirdly, I really like listening to this at work…it’s great background entertainment because I don’t really need to focus on it to understand what’s going on or being said. Also, as a millennial woman, I am constantly fighting my ingrained shame when thinking of myself as a sexual being and listening to these two has truly made me feel more confident and comfortable in this topic.

Watching

Maniac, Netflix. I’m so confused and so riveted.

Loving

Wide Leg Track Pants, House of Harlow 1960 x REVOLVE. I adore these. I want them. I need them. In. Every. Color.

So I just found out the Museum of Ice Cream and Sephora have a collab collection and I’m dyiinnnng. It’s too fucking cute!!

Busy Philipps’ pantry and this shelfie on Michelle Lee’s Insta give me so much happiness. Can you tell I love color and am Type A? 😏
