Weekly Roundup #44: Nobel Prizes and Lizzo
I completed a full Tough Mudder this past Saturday and, as I publish this, I can barely move…what are your favorite remedies for sore muscles? Or, really, sore everything? Anyone else weirded out by this crazy weather? I’m so ready for it to just be slightly chilly now! No more 80 degrees days, please and thank you.
Reading
D is for Deadbeat, Sue Grafton.
E is for Evidence, Sue Grafton. Don’t worry, I only got C through E, y’all. I’ll have to work my way through the rest of the alphabet later.
Lizzo Wants to Build You Up, The New York Times. I loved Lizzo’s EP so much and her message is so on point, especially in this day and age, I cannot wait to see what she comes out with in her debut album. Also, the closing paragraph in this article actually made me tear up a little.
Banksy painting 'self-destructs' moments after being sold for $1.4 million at auction, CNN. This is incredible. Banksy will forever and always be an icon.
Top 25 2018, Into the Gloss. Gimme allll of them! I can reiterate the magic of Peach Slices Acne Spot Dots—they are fiaaaahh. First on my list to try? I think the retinol. That or the Slip Scrunches because, UGH 😍
The Unbearable Horniness Of Being Jenny Slate, Nylon. I adore her and this interview really resonated with me. Also, if you haven’t watched Marcel the Shell, do it. Do it now!
The Chronicles of Narnia being made into new movies by Netflix, Entertainment Weekly. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! YES YES YES!! As for watering down the Christian themes? Go for it, Netflix, I didn’t even know these books had Christian themes until around six years ago.
What Would Women Do If Men Weren’t Allowed Outside Past 9pm? Nylon. I think my mind just exploded because so. many. things. Not that I want men to have a curfew (anti-feminists, far rights, calm TF down), but I could walk to my car at night without freaking out and whipping around at any noise. I could walk home to the train casually and without my keys tucked between my fingers. I could have headphones on and listen to music while running, especially during the summer when the nights can be so much cooler. It’s sad how many more things there are.
John Mayer, Thundercat, SZA, Anderson .Paak, Chance The Rapper, & More Tapped For Upcoming Mac Miller Tribute Concert, Live for Live Music. 💔🙏🏼
This Season Of ‘Black Mirror’ Will Let You Choose Your Own Adventure, Nylon. I’m. so. EXCITED!!
Australia set to 'eliminate' cervical cancer by 2028, CNN. This is incredible!! See what happens when you don’t exclusively teach abstinence, America?
Scientists Who Sparked Revolution In Cancer Treatment Share Nobel Prize In Medicine, NPR. This 👏🏼 is 👏🏼 incredible! They were awarded for their work in immunotherapy, aka using the body’s own immune system to fight off cancer cells.
Drew Barrymore Didn’t Actually Participate In This Now-Viral Interview With EgyptAir’s In-Flight Magazine, Nylon. I don’t…but…what’s happening.
2018 Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Yazidi Activist and Congolese Doctor, The New York Times. “The award went to Nadia Murad, 25, who became the voice and face of women who survived sexual violence by the Islamic State, and to Dr. Denis Mukwege, 63, who has treated thousands of women in a country once called the rape capital of the world.” Bravo to these two heroes!
Ana Carrasco becomes first female rider to win motorbike world title, The Guardian. Yass girl! (That sport looks absolutely terrifying.)
Amazon Sets $15 Minimum Wage For U.S. Employees, Including Temps, NPR. I’d love a pay bump. For temps too? That’s pretty awesome.
Whereabouts of almost 1,300 Missouri sex offenders unknown, AP. Yeah…cool. Cool, cool, totally fine. “ ‘As it stands the sex offender registry really provides a false sense of security,’ Galloway said at a news conference in St. Louis.” Yes. Yes, it does.
Former rap mogul 'Suge' Knight jailed for 28 years for killing man with car, The Guardian. It’s been a downward spiral for Knight since the 90s.
California is 1st state to require women on corporate boards, AP. This is incredible and long overdue. Here’s hoping more states take note. And, by the way, no, no one is saying they should just hire any ol’ woman, but qualified women, who typically don’t get the same chance as a man for this position.
US justice department sues California over new net neutrality law, The Guardian. Oh. Oh ho ho. Justice Department, you can go fuck ya’self. Bring back net neutrality!
Presidential alert: The best Twitter reactions to Trump, FEMA's test alert, USA Today. I didn’t get it and this is how concerned I am. Also, everyone around me in my office yelled some variation of “get off my phone, Trump!!” and I died.
Does the Senate have the votes to confirm Kavanaugh? The Washington Post. Heitkamp, Manchin III, Collins, Flake, Murkowski, let’s DO THIS! Make the right choice and do NOT confirm him!
Kavanaugh awaits fate as senators read FBI report, CNN. Apparently just one copy is available and the two parties will read in alternating one-hour shifts…I don’t understand how that makes sense. I guess so they can discuss each prior hour, while the other party reads?
Kavanaugh says he ‘might have been too emotional’ at hearing, AP. Ya think? Good look for a judge…where being impartial is basically in the definition.
Flake says he'll vote to confirm Kavanaugh, making confirmation more likely, CBS. It takes someone with a lot of courage to say he would confirm Kavanaugh after being confronted in the elevator by crying survivors…that or a true coward.
McConnell: Senate will hold Kavanaugh vote 'this week,' The Hill. Fuck yooooouuuu.
Judge blocks Trump administration from ending protections for some immigrants, NBC. Because Trump’s decision was motivated by racism (thank you)…and the crowd goes wild.
The Big Hack: How China Used a Tiny Chip to Infiltrate U.S. Companies, Bloomberg. Well, this is scary. Chinese manufacturing subcontractors inserted a tiny microchip, basically the size of a grain of rice, into servers for Elemental Technologies. These servers “can be found in Department of Defense data centers, the CIA’s drone operations, and the onboard networks of Navy warships,” plus tens more. So…kinda a big fucking deal.

Indonesia earthquake kills hundreds as quake triggers 20-foot-high tsunami waves, CBS. Apparently, the country hasn't declared this a national disaster zone yet and it can't get funding or supplies from other countries until that happens. It was said the death toll could go into the thousands so I don’t know what they’re waiting on.
Venezuela: nearly 2m people have fled country since 2015, UN says, The Guardian. 5,000 people a day. Inflation could hit 1,000,000 percent by the end of the year so people can’t afford even the most basic items and are starving.
Jean-Claude Arnault, man at centre of Nobel scandal, jailed for rape, The Guardian. He’s the husband of a member of the Swedish academy who awards the Nobel Prize for Literature. Apparently, he’s bragged about being the academy’s “19th member”…gross.
Macedonia’s messy referendum puts name deal at risk, Politico. But far less than the 50 percent of the population needed for the vote to count showed up. So they’re still at a standstill.
Catalonia Erupts In Renewed Protests One Year After Independence Vote, NPR. It’s been exactly one year since Catalonia declared independence from Spain.
Listening
Without Me, Halsey. I mean, I just love everything she puts out.
Morph, Twenty One Pilots. Really into their new album.
Watching
Barry, HBO. I’d been wanting to start this because I adore Bill Hader, and then he and Henry Winkler won their Emmys so I knew I had to get on this. Saturday, post-Tough Mudder, I finally started and it’s so. freaking. good. I watched by myself so I told the bf he needs to get on it and I’ll even rewatch the first four episodes with him. Highly recommend this show!
Loving
Tough Mudder. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and then my boyfriend surprised me with tickets this year. Now, let me preface this by saying, I AM NOT IN SHAPE. The only form of exercise I’ve gotten since June is sporadically running outside and my physical therapy sessions, which ended weeks ago. So this was 10 miles plus somewhere around 20 obstacles and I was still able to do it. I’m incredibly sore, but my group had a lot of fun doing it together (and enjoying the free beer after). I really encourage you to take on this challenge if you’re at all interested. If I can do it, anyone can!
