Terror Jr in 2018
The dark electropop duo has officially completed the Bop City trilogy, ending that grape-flavored era and moving toward an even more socio-political message. Never ones to shy away from issues spanning LGBTQ+, religion, women’s rights to substance abuse, their newest tunes are more pointed responses to the current political climate, while still keeping with their recognizable spine-chilling melodies. “Heaven Wasn’t Made For Me” was released July 13 and “A-OK (Everything’s Perfect)” September 28.
In “Heaven Wasn’t Made For Me,” the duo reject the idea of the promised land after seeing the people who’ve been accepted and what they’ve done to get to paradise, including using money, intolerance, fake virtue and all the religious leaders who use their platforms to only preach hate.
“If there’s people you’ve gotta hate for / Loving what they made for, loving who they came for / Where crooked saints get the big reward / No, Heaven wasn’t made for me”
Lisa bluntly sings of tossing religion to the side in my favorite verse: “All these shitty people made it past the gates/So you can keep your faith.” Per their brand, drugs and the escape through them is also discussed.
A Bible verse closes out the song, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission,” leaving you with cold fears for our future. Meanwhile, in the video (Terror Jr’s first, by the way), Lisa is engulfed by flames—at the stake or in hell, that’s up to you—while coldly staring down the camera, a blatant disregard for these Bible teachings.
The only context Terror Jr provides to this song is “don’t forget to question everything.”
“A-OK (Everything’s Perfect)” begins with a Lisa’s vision of living “without permission,” an obvious nod to women’s rights. It continues into a succinct summation of society as a whole, “Everyone's A-OK/If you don't look too hard.” The rampant sexual assault culture also gets a nod with Lisa asking why she has to be the one who stays strong, when “you’re” the one that’s doing something wrong? She then threatens to show her assaulter’s future lovers who he really is. It’s a poignant message, particularly in this current news cycle with Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford permeating every station.
Whether or not you agree with their views, Terror Jr is on a roll and I’m am VERY here for it. Take a listen at any of the included links up top and tell me what you think!
