Weekly Roundup #45: Lipsticks and The Good Place
I’ve decided this will be my last Weekly Roundup as it is. It’s been a year and it’s time for a change. Namely, getting rid of the news aspect. Every week, I have to force myself to discuss the shitty things happening in our country and around the world. I’m sick of it. I started this blog as a creative escape from the more humdrum aspects of my life and including the news takes away from that. From here on out, I will only be discussing the fun, entertaining, weird or just straight interesting pieces I read. Makeup, music, travel, trendy foods, that’s what this will continue as. Sound off in the comments if you have an opinion. Thank you for reading along with me for the past year, I’m looking forward to the next year!
Reading
All We Ever Wanted, Emily Giffin. This is the author of Something Borrowed, which, while good, was definitely a fluffy, girly novel, so I was expecting the same from this book. However, man, was I wrong. This book is a perfect read in the current climate and the twists were not overdone…highly recommend this book.
The Virgin Suicides, Jeffrey Eugenides. I’ve seen the movie, but, for years, have wanted to read the book. I finally found a copy at an old book store a couple weeks ago and had to grab it.
All the Lipsticks I’ve Bought for Women I’ll Never Be, The Cut. I love love love this story. I can truly relate to the author.
The Ultimate Sitcom, The New York Times. I’ve talked about my love for The Good Place in an earlier roundup and I’m not alone. This is a deep dive into why Mike Schur chose the topic of ethics as the show’s subject, how it’s included and why the show is so popular in today’s society.
From Nude Retreats to Wedding Gifts: Modern Etiquette for the Curious Millennial, Man Repeller. Number 👏🏼 6 👏🏼
This is 18 Around the World—Through Girls’ Eyes, The New York Times. This was a super interesting read. Some girls are planning their educational futures, one is already married, one is part of an indigenous group in Mexico, one is a mother, one is part of a skate group, but all are worried about women’s future and our planet’s future. This is why we see so much hope in the future generations. We only hope they learn from our mistakes, as we’ve learned from the errors of past generations (looking at you, Baby Boomers).
Unstyled: Why Are Designers Still Telling Women To Dress 'Sexy?' Refinery29. This is the 5-Minute Read from their Unstyled podcast. “The reclamation of anger in culture and pop culture means that the opposite of ‘sexy’ is not ‘covered-up’ or ‘demure’ — it’s self-possessed…’Sexiness’ on the runways doesn't reflect the way the world is evolving, and the collective industry needs to reconsider how it's conceiving and selling perceptions of women back to them.“
“Asian Beauty is Fluid, Vulnerable, & All Around Us.” Milk.xyz. I find seeing different beauty looks, views and ideas is so inspiring and creativity-inducing.
A Star Is Born: The Easter Eggs Bradley Cooper Hid in His Lady Gaga Remake, Vanity Fair. This movie apparently got an eight-minute standing ovation at its premiere…I officially have to see this movie. Side note: I love Lady Gaga’s pared-down look.
The New Makeup Rules, Into the Gloss. Fall’s makeup trends—gimme all the vibrant purples!
Dating Without Texting Is the Absolute Best, The Cut. I totally get this and appreciate the reasoning; however, when your SO travels, like mine, it’s a little different. Plus, now that he has his own laptop, we Gchat throughout the day, and I love it. We can send URLs of events we want to go and discuss in the moment, or save to talk IRL. We can share a photo of a bedspread one of us is really loving, and hoping the other will too. I think you just have to figure out what works best for your relationship and that may mean you need to try out multiple options.
Lindsey Buckingham Sues Fleetwood Mac Over Dismissal From Band, Rolling Stone. Can’t we just all get along?
We Went To The Radical Camping Retreat Where Women Get Their Smoke On, Nylon. As a fellow lover of the Laura Ingalls series and Island of the Blue Dolphins, I really appreciate the writer’s take from this retreat. Color me intrigued. It sounds so freeing. (I’m assuming “radical” is used sarcastically…)
If You Missed Comic Con This Year, We’ve Got You Covered, Milk.xyz. These were incredible. I’m so in awe of the talent and passion behind true cosplay.
My Private Oval Office Press Conference With Donald Trump, Mike Pence, John Kelly, and Mike Pompeo, Intelligencer. This was ridiculously hard to read, only because of the often-included quotes from Trump. I found myself having to reread his sentences multiple times to readjust breaks and syntax. The man is a bumbling fool who just likes to hear himself talk and the people surrounding him are like those encouraging a spoiled, tantrum-prone child.
Kanye West’s iPhone passcode is 000000, The Verge. Hahahahahaha, I mean, this says it all.
Same-sex mouse parents give birth via gene editing, National Geographic. This is so fascinating! Genetic targeting, imprinting, there’s so much to learn. Also, can’t wait to see all the triggered comments about this. 👋🏼
They failed mandatory pregnancy tests at school. Then they were expelled, CNN. And this is exactly why women are consistently underrepresented and not given a seat at the table. They’re forced to stay home, forced to be uneducated, forced to be second class citizens.
Fyre Festival Organizer Has Been Sentenced To Six Years In Prison, Nylon. Lol. This whole fiasco, man.
A White Woman Called The Cops On A Black Man Babysitting Two White Children, Refinery29. This is ABSURD. What a ridiculous, disgusting human. Take a look at the details, honey. His shirt had the logo/name of his childcare company on it. Those children were probably terrified. “Towards the end of the Facebook video the officer asks Lewis if he is recording. He responds, ‘I'm letting the world know, like, what's really going on. It's 2018. I can't even step out into the community without being profiled.’ "
Deciem’s Founder Says The Brand Is Shutting Down, Nylon. I love their hyaluronic acid, but I haven’t purchased anything from this brand in a while. And I stopped following their Instagram account a loooong time ago because Truaxe is insane. It’s about time this all caught up to him.
Peyton Manning has hilarious reaction to Drew Brees breaking his record, USA Today. I fucking love Peyton Manning.
92 Military Dogs Coming Home From Afghanistan After a Job Well Done, The Irfo. My heart. ❤️ Major props to organizations like AMK9 and Piper’s Playhouse for ensuring the safety and eventually stable and loving environment for these furry heroes.
Major Climate Report Describes a Strong Risk of Crisis as Early as 2040, The New York Times. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR DENIERS TO START LISTENING?? We are on the verge of destroying our planet, we’ve already irreparably damaged it, but we could bring about our own extinction if we don’t stop taking the easy route and start actually caring about our planet and ALL its residents.
#HimToo: how an attempt to criticize #MeToo went delightfully wrong, The Guardian. Good lord, that poor guy. Shocker, his mom’s from Florida…😏 but, really, props to him for powering through the shitstorm his mom created and trying to turn a negative into a positive.
Millennials Kill Again. The Latest Victim? American Cheese, Bloomberg. Lol, PLEASE. But also, American cheese is disgusting and I’m totally fine with “killing” it.
"Emotional support" squirrel and its owner ousted from Frontier Airlines flight, CBS. What is wrong with people.
Voter registrations skyrocket after Taylor Swift's get-out-the-vote push, CNBC. Really, people? It took Taylor Swift to get you to register? 🙄 I’ll take it. Millennials and Gen Z, let’s DO THIS!
Hurricane Michael, nearing landfall, could be Florida Panhandle's 'worst storm ... in a century,' CNN. Jesus.
Hurricane Michael by the numbers: 11 dead, 1.6 million homes, businesses without power, ABC. This is a by-the-numbers piece and the numbers are scary.
Limo in New York crash "not supposed to be on the road," governor says, CBS. This is so tragic, so horrific and should never have happened. The car shouldn’t have even been on the road and the driver shouldn’t have been allowed to drive it. Four of the victims were sisters, one of whom was celebrating her 30th birthday, the reason for the trip.
Instagram to use artificial intelligence to detect bullying in photos, NBC. I’ll be interested to see how this works, but I’m all for anything anti-bullying and anti-trolling.
Nikki Haley leaving U.N. ambassador post at end of the year, CBS. It was thought she may run for president in 2020, but now she apparently plans to campaign for King Cheeto instead. I do applaud her for being a strong woman, willing to oppose powerful men during her career. As we’ve seen, particularly in the current political climate, this takes courage.
Losses on Wall Street ripple through Asia; stocks slump, AP. Here we go.
The Dow plummets for a second straight day as Nasdaq flirts with correction, NBC. It’s the third biggest drop in history, but is only at its lowest level since February.
Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke Found Guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Shooting of Laquan McDonald, Time. It’s about time one of these assholes was brought to justice.
Kavanaugh sworn to high court after rancorous confirmation, AP. Well. I despise everyone, but mostly Manchin and Collins. Y’all can go fuck yourselves. By the way, with a vote of 50-48 to confirm, this was the slimmest margin for a SCOTUS nom in almost 140 years.
Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg re-registers as a Democrat, ABC. Annnd he’s back. Reading this reminded me of Michael’s vasectomy story in the dinner party episode…”Snip, snap! Snip, snap!” 😅
Solar-powered drug tunnel discovered on Mexican border with California, The Guardian. Why can’t we all be as energy-efficient?! 😂 But seriously.

Disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi – timeline, The Guardian. Saudi Arabia is being accused of murdering Khashoggi inside the Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul. He went in to get paperwork so he could remarry, while his fiancée waited outside. After several hours, she called the authorities and he has yet to be found. I can’t even imagine her terror.
Brazil’s far-right candidate falls short of election stunner, AP. Oh good. Yet another offensive, backward, piece of shit is soon to be in power. Hooray for civilization.
Listening
Sucker Punch, Sigrid.
Born to Be Yours, Kygo and Imagine Dragons.
Watching
Night Running, Millie Turner. This song is about that moment when you get back from a great night out and are running high on adrenaline. Can you feel it?
New Girl, Fox. Obviously this isn’t new, but I’m finally catching up on Netflix and I forgot how delightful this show is. Also, I want Zooey Deschanel’s season 6 bangs, ASAP.
