Weekly Roundup #7: Desk buttons and guilty pleas
Ok, so I skipped last week because of the aforementioned death and Thanksgiving (if you didn't notice, I forgive you). But I'm back and ready to go this week!
Reading
People for sale, CNN. How? HOW are we not past such atrocities?
The wounds they carry, The Washington Post. It may feel we've moved on once it's no longer in media's spotlight, but, for so many, the fear is still very present.
What Michael Flynn’s Guilty Plea Means in Mueller’s Russia Probe, New York Times. "Those other potential charges were the leverage that Mr. Mueller successfully used to pressure Mr. Flynn to flip and cooperate in exchange for leniency." We'll all be waiting on the edge of our seats for what comes next.
Jay-Z Discusses Rap, Marriage and Being a Black Man in Trump’s America, New York Times. Love this quote from Jay-Z, "What you reveal, you heal." So simple and so true.
Garrison Keillor Accused Of 'Inappropriate Behavior,' Minnesota Public Radio Says, NPR. I grew up listening to A Prairie Home Companion every Sunday. Come ON, men!
Matt Lauer Accused of Sexual Harassment by Multiple Women, Variety. Disgusting misuse of power. A BUTTON under your desk, dude?? This is not a Fifty Shades novel.
Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America, Teen Vogue. Oldie, but goodie. And for some entertaining Twitter fodder, follow the writer, Lauren Duca. Also, I can't believe we even have to worry about this, but if you're concerned about fake news, here are tips for avoiding it and a comprehensive list of suspect sites from communications professor Melissa Zimdars.
Matt Lauer, fired ‘Today’ anchor accused of sexual misconduct, says ‘I am truly sorry,’ NBC. "Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized...Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job." Oh please. Just another dude who will say he was a problem or sex addiction and needs to go to rehab, or "take some time to figure out my issues."
Co-founder of Ice Bucket Challenge dies after ALS battle, ABC. Such a horrible, horrible disease. Jeanette Senerchia is an unbelievably strong woman.
Matilda Actress Mara Wilson: A 13-Year-Old Girl Is Not “All Grown Up,” Elle.
Mom kept HIV a secret and her whole family tested positive, CNN.
I Didn't Worry About Abortion Law — Until I Needed an Abortion at 32 Weeks, Refinery29. Such an important, heartbreaking story.
Our Love Affair With Digital Is Over, New York Times. "As much as we might fantasize about it, we probably won’t delete our social media accounts and toss our phones in the nearest body of water. What we can do is to restore some sense of balance over our relationship with digital technology, and the best way to do that is with analog: the ying to digital’s yang." Agree, agree, AGREE. I've been curating my own record collections for the last five or so years now. If only my parents had kept theirs out of nostalgia!

Supreme Court Rejects Case Over Confederate Emblem On Mississippi Flag, NPR. "In 2001, the state voted to stick with the controversial design. But some official bodies — cities, counties and universities, including the flagship University of Mississippi — refuse to fly the banner." Well, that's the one time I'll cheer on Ole Miss.
9 Terrible First Date Convos I've Had This Year — Because 2017 Is A Dumpster Fire, Refinery29.
Watching
Mindhunters, Netflix. I've been dying to watch this show and finally was able to get the boyfriend to pause on Sons of Anarchy to do so, and we have not been disappointed. The actor who plays Ed Kemper is just stellar. Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany are perfect together, lots of comedic moments in their conversations. I will say, Debbie's constant sarcasm kind of gets on my nerves, and this is coming from a fairly sarcastic person, but, hey, you do you, girl.
Floribama Shore, MTV. Yep. I admit it. I tuned it for a dying network's attempt to revamp the classic Jersey Shore, and I dig it. Like, I'm actively waiting for the next episode (aka the third because they aired two episodes Monday). It's trashy. It's ridiculous. It's obnoxious. And it's wonderful.
