Weekly Roundup #72: Burnout and breakfast

Weekly Roundup #72: Burnout and breakfast

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH, Y’ALL!! Support those who need us, those who are hated on, looked down upon, those who don’t have it easy because of how they were born. They need us. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜💖🖤

Wow, it was a busy week! So many events, so much to do at work, but it’s all exciting! However, on the flip side, burnout is really trendy lately because it’s been labeled an official diagnosis. Meanwhile, here I am after a straight week of work, working Gov Ball over the weekend and right back to the full work week, including an event 😅 You better believe I’m nervously reading those articles to see if I fit the bill.

Reading

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, Stuart Turton. This book took me forever to read because it’s so hefty but it’s gooood!

Here's The Pride Gear That Actually Benefits The LGBTQ Community, Nylon. Gimme all the Milk Makeup and those Reeboks!! 🏳️‍🌈

#KuToo no more! Japanese women take stand against high heels, Reuters. YES! Fuck heels! There’s no reason women should be forced to wear them ever, but ESPECIALLY in the work place. You try tottering around on an extra four inches for 12 hours and tell me you’re not distracted by the pain and discomfort. Not to mention, it takes you four times longer to get anywhere. And this is coming from someone who used to wear heels all the time. Now, I’m paying for it with “future bunions,” as I call them, chronic back pain and pain after wearing narrow toe shoes, even without heels. So let people wear whatever they want and don’t you dare say women have to wear heels.

You Can Now Be Diagnosed With Burnout, The Cut. I was definitely feeling this before I left The Knot.

For Avicii Collaborator, Finishing Posthumous Album 'Was Also A Grieving Process,' NPR. I started to tear up while reading this, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to try and finish this work that you know will stand as Tim’s legacy. I love the part about “Fades Away” though. It’s the perfect ending.

All Eyes On Samira Wiley, Nylon. Wiley is just a powerhouse. She makes you care about her characters. I can definitely see her being incredibly empathetic and I can relate to the pain that sometimes causes you internally.

I Broke Breakfast, The Atlantic. I totally agree, you can eat whatever you want for breakfast! I mean, as long as it’s healthy, who cares?? However…it’s definitely ingrained in me now that I crave granola or yogurt or oatmeal or, on weekends, savory dishes with eggs or potatoes. So I’ll probably stick to those foods in the morning, but if I find myself craving stir fry at 11 am…I won’t stop myself from having that instead!

Robert Downey Jr. Announces Footprint Coalition to Clean Up the World With Advanced Tech, Variety. If this is a real thing…AMAZING. The possibility of being able to clean up our planet in a decade?? That’s mind-boggling. We done this damage over centuries, but most of it over the last 50 years, so to begin to actually be able to fix it is huge.

What Apple’s iTunes Shutdown Means for Music Fans, Pitchfork. Given that I exclusively use Spotify now, it appears I’ll be just fine.

What Does Your Restaurant Tote Say About You? Bon Appétit. But what if your tote is an amika bag?e

There Are Two Types of Airport People, The Atlantic. What if you’re in between the two…tries to be semi-on time, always runs late and is super stressed about it?

6 Trends Our Editors Love for Summer (and 4 We’re Ready to Retire), PureWow. Leave bike shorts and dad sneakers alone! I’m here for everything comfy! ‘80s-inspired belted dresses? That does not fall in that category…gross.

The Subtle Subversions of Always Be My Maybe, The Atlantic. Ok, I’m interested! Still need to watch Fresh Off the Boat, I had no idea Ali Wong wrote it!

Excuse Me, But Dr. Martens Can't Make A Comeback, Nylon. Ah-GREED. Not that I’m some punk rock, anti-establishment cool girl, but the idea that the Hadids and Jenners of the world are “bringing Docs back” is actually offensive.

Listening

TIM, Avicii. This is Tim ____’s posthumous album, released by his family. It hurts my heart to listen to it—he was such a talent and gone far too early—but I’m so grateful we have these songs to continue to appreciate him.

Governors Ball 2019. Sunday was a shit show (what can you do 🤷🏼‍♀️), but there were quite a few artists here and everyone I met was honestly so nice and friendly. It’s kind of nostalgic to listen to everything after the fact.

Firefly 2019. Only a couple more weeks!!

Watching

Chernobyl, HBO. This show is really tough to watch. It’s addicting and so good, but it’s horrifying. Both in what they show and because you know it really happened. I find myself screaming at characters because I’m so angry that they prioritized these petty things over human lives. And the pets…let’s just say we had to fast forward through a few scenes in Episode 4. I highly recommend watching this though and then reading everything you can about it. The victims of this tragedy deserve that, at least.

Loving

Glitterbaby (Blue to Pink), Smith & Cult. This is a liquid glitter shadow that turns black when you smudge it out, aka instant smoky eye, even for the extremely non-talented in the makeup department (hi 🙋🏼‍♀️). I finally tested it out on Saturday night and got soooo many compliments! See below for my embarrassing attempt at capturing the look for this blog. It’s just a fun alternative to the normal going out makeup and I’m definitely taking it to Firefly for night wear.
