Weekly Roundup #68: Sobriety and slumber parties

Weekly Roundup #68: Sobriety and slumber parties

Spring is officially here, y’all! This past Saturday was gorgeous and it was so nice to just be outside all day. Alsoooo, who watched Game of Thrones last night?? What do you think Bran will say to Jaime? Hit me up with all your theories for this season in the comments. Let’s talk.

Reading

You Shall Know Our Velocity! Dave Eggers. A rec and gift from my brother. I find it odd yet somehow I get lost in it.

The case for grown-up slumber parties, The Lily. I’ve had plenty of girls’ trips and late-night “I’m just going to stay on your couch” times with friends, but I love the idea of bringing back the sleepover. It’s true, it was such a magical time in our youth, who says it can’t still be?

Millennials Are Sick of Drinking, The Atlantic. I definitely feel this way sometimes and I absolutely drink less than I used to, particularly during the week. Weekday drinking is now a rare occurrence, maybe a beer after dinner, but weekends are still pretty alcohol-driven, especially because I love brunch 🙃 I do find myself drinking less out though—that shit’s expensive!

The Important Difference Between Loneliness and Solitude, Man Repeller. I always think being a full-time freelancer would be nice, but then I remember that I like having people around me most of the time. I like talking to my coworkers and being able to spontaneously bounce ideas off each other. I really just like that feeling of camaraderie.

The 20 Best Music Festivals of Summer 2019, Pitchfork. Alright, so Firefly wasn’t on the list, but we have to see how this year goes under the new Coachella management anyway. Here are the three I would be interesting in hitting.

  1. Glastonbury Festival - I’ve already wanted to go to this one day, but I’m adding it!

  2. FORM - THOSE HEADLINERS, holy shit! My absolute faves. Florence?? Skrillex?? In an intimate setting?? Be still my heart. Plus, Snail Mail and Pussy Riot. Why couldn't I have found this one earlier?!

  3. Railbird Festival - Hozier, ‘nuff said. So maybe I wouldn’t normally be interested but this year? Count me in.

Why You Procrastinate (It Has Nothing to Do With Self-Control), The New York Times. “ ‘Procrastination is an emotion regulation problem, not a time management problem.’ “ YES.

Privileged, The Players’ Tribune. I love this piece. “What I’m realizing is, no matter how passionately I commit to being an ally, and no matter how unwavering my support is for NBA and WNBA players of color….. I’m still in this conversation from the privileged perspective of opting in to it. Which of course means that on the flip side, I could just as easily opt out of it. Every day, I’m given that choice — I’m granted that privilege — based on the color of my skin.”

Buttery Skin Is the Biggest New Makeup Trend, and I Tried It, Allure. I like it, but I think I’ll stick with the dewy look because I cannot put this much makeup on…😅

Why the Event Horizon Telescope took so long to image a black hole, Astronomy. 20 YEARS. I had no idea.

What Four Women Did When They Found Out They Were Making Less Money Than the Guys, Cosmopolitan. I’m currently fighting to be paid what I know I’m worth and there are no guys involved…I just found out I make the least amount on my team despite being well-respected member and it pushed me to start really fighting for myself. So far I’m in limbo, but hopefully I’ll see some changes in the next few months.

Mad Decent Block Party 2019 happens in Mass w/ Billie Eilish, Major Lazer, G-Eazy, more, Brooklyn Vegan. Really hoping it’d be IN Brooklyn, but…I may be willing to travel for this one. That bounce house, amirite? 😉

Fleetwood Mac Postpones North American Tour, Cancels Recently Announced New Orleans Jazz Fest Slot, Live for Live Music. Ahhhhh, Steviiieeee!! Selfishly, so glad I already saw them…

Donald Glover, Rihanna's 'Guava Island' to Briefly Stream for Free on Amazon, The Hollywood Reporter. Ok, who’s giving me their Amazon Prime password??

Kate McKinnon to Star as Elizabeth Holmes in Limited Series The Dropoutat Hulu, People. I. Can’t. WAIT!!

Have Back Pain? You Need to Know About Balneotherapy, PureWow. I mean, I have the ingredients…I’ll try anything!

14 Cheap Spring Dresses In Target’s Sale That Are Chic, Breezy, & Under $30, The Zoe Report. Ok, I’m actually into these. And I desperately need a summer wardrobe refresh.

This Is the Trendiest Eye Shadow Color to Try This Spring, PureWow. Yes, yes, yeeess!

‘Smallville’ actress pleads guilty in sex-trafficking case, AP. I’m actually shocked she changed her plea. Hopefully she’s actually realizing the gross error of her ways.

Instagram Influencer Reports Deleted Account to Police, Jezebel. Sweetie pie needs a reality check but, also, “history of racist comments?” Buh-bye! 👋🏼

If y’all are interested in where I come across some of the stories I read, check out the Girls’ Night In newsletter! I look forward to it every week. Also, for daily news, try The Skimm newsletter. It sends on weekdays only and gives you a quick hit of the biggest news happening that day.

Listening

SOS, Avicii. This is so good and I actually teared up the first time I heard it because the feels just really hit me so hard, especially with this title.

Mood Booster, Spotify. I followed this playlist a while back but hadn’t listened in a while and it’s sooooo good. Some songs that just made me start involuntarily groovin’: Rita Ora’s “Let You Love Me” and Lil Wayne’s remix of “Genius” by Sia, Diplo and Labrinth, or LSD. 😉

Kill This Love, BLACKPINK. I’m not really a K-pop kinda gal, but, after reading this review, I decided to give it a try out of curiosity. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all, a little more “hard” than I was thinking it’d be. I probably won’t be putting this on replay, but some of the songs are definitely good pregame picks! Maybe you caught their livestream at Coachella last Friday (or on the Times Square big screen if you’re in NYC, courtesy of YouTube) but worth a listen.

Watching

GAME OF THRONES FINAL SEASON!!

Awkward, MTV. I would catch snippets of this show back in the day but never actually watched it. I saw it on Hulu and decided to check it out. It is…well, probably exactly what you’d expect from a MTV show, but I appreciate the main character is not traditionally hot. I don’t know, it’s a good show to have on in the background or to wind down to since you don’t have to pay full attention.

Loving

Drunk Shakespeare. The bf surprised me with tickets to this show and it. was. FANTASTIC. It’s so fucking funny and just utterly delightful. The cast is hilarious and so talented, I definitely want to go again so comment if you’re in! 🙃
