Weekly Roundup #57: Partners and low-rise
Reading
Bitter Orange, Claire Fuller. This book was veerrrry slow going, but very descriptive and ultimately pretty good.
The Last Mrs. Parrish, Liv Constantine. This plot was extremely predictable and the writing is just straight up bad. However, if you like thrillers, maybe read it anyway? It keeps you entertained at least.
Terror Jr Debuts Hypnotic New Single 'Kinda Iconic,' Billboard. I love that they don’t shy away from uncomfortable topics and that they stay strong in their messaging.
Sex EducationIs More Than Just a Cool Title, GQ. Skins will always been my first love, but Lovesick is another great British show hitting all the key words mentioned in this article. Sex Education is the latest and, well, I won’t say greatest because of my aforementioned love (Series 2 forever!), but definitely one of my new faves.
Boyfriend and girlfriend are out. ‘Partners’ are in. Here’s why more millennials are changing how they define their relationships. The Lily. I don’t use “partner” because I see marriage as becoming obsolete, but because I want to be inclusive. I understand that there are people out here who have never been to claim the words “boyfriend” or “girlfriend” because they weren’t able to come out about their true sexuality. I also understand that I will never know how that truly felt. The least I can do is use the language that is gender-inclusive and sexually-inclusive. On the flip side, I know I’m privileged so I don’t want to take this word on as my own when it doesn’t belong to me. So, on that note, if anyone has insight into this and thinks there’s a way I could be doing this better, please let me know! I’m always open to expanding my horizons and growing as a human.
Alternate Uses for Low-Rise Jeans, The New Yorker. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO COME BACK IF WE DON’T LET THEM! (Favorite = the last one)
Why Millennials Love ‘Grace & Frankie,’ Nylon. Agreed, Brianna is the best. Don’t @ me. Also, yes, I think the sweet spot is that we’re seeing people in their 70s so open to same-sex relationships, sex outside of marriage, various races and classes and other more modernities. Basically, all the things we see older people so against in mainstream media. It’s heartwarming to know the older generations aren’t all terrible. 🙃
Sea.Hear.Now Festival Announces 2019 Headliners: Dave Matthews Band & The Lumineers, Live for Live Music. I must go. The Lumineers on the beach?? Yes, please! I really wanted to see Incubus last year, so I have to hit this up this year, out of respect for my disappointed 2018 self.
Broad City Is Back for One Last Time, and That Feels Right, Vulture. At first, I thought, what?? Never! This show can never end! But after reading this article, I can see why the writer is probably correct. I also am still so excited to watch this show and I’ll be sad when it ends. It’ll forever stay on my Hulu list though.
Model with Down’s Syndrome becomes brand ambassador for Benefit cosmetics, Metro. Grant is making WAVES, people! Go girl!
Oscars: 'Roma,' 'Favourite' Top Nominations With 10 Apiece, The Hollywood Reporter. In case you haven’t heard, there’s a ton of firsts: first time a superhero movie has been nominated for Best Picture; first time Spike Lee has been nominated for best director; the first time Regina King and Sam Elliott have been nominated; Yalitzia Aparicio, who plays Cleo in Netflix's Roma, is the first Mexican Indigenous actor to ever be nominated for an Oscar. You know, just to name a few.
I Was a 4-Year-Old Trapped in a Teenager’s Body, The Cut. This was a pretty fascinating read. Middle school is hard enough without going through what this guy did.
What Happened to Lindsay Lohan, BuzzFeed. Has anyone watched Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club? It’s yet another look at stupid people doing stupid shit. It’s not even really about here, except when she comes in during the talking head interviews. And this story hits the nail on the head when it says she’s trying to be Lisa Vanderpump. Floribama Shore is marginally better than this show and the bf and I now hate-watch Floribama. I kinda feel for Lohan—growing up is hard enough without being filmed and photographed 24/7 by skeevy vultures trying to make money off you. I made my share of mistakes and I certainly could make more in the future, but at least the whole world won’t care. That’s a deep hole to try and pull yourself out of, especially when no one is there to help.
Petite Meller, Wonderland. I would love to have a colorful record collection…
How Your Own Language Can Make or Break 2019, Create & Curate. Ok, this is a little silly, but it’s like how faking a smile will eventually actually make you happier. Seriously, studies have shown this! So twisting your language to be more positive can give you a better outlook and improve your quality of life.
How do *you* draw an X? The internet is confused, Today. I’m a 7, aka the only correct way! What are you?
‘Smoked Marshmallow’ Is the Latest Gourmand Hair Color Trend, and It’s Surprisingly Low-Maintenance, PureWow. Ok. So, what’s really happening is someone is looking at the same color and just spouting off different possibilities for its jelly bean name. And they all sound delicious.
Who Was Lil Tay? The Cut. This is just gross.
President Trump Posts Altered Photos to Facebook and Instagram That Make Him Look Thinner, Gizmodo. This is hilarious. Seriously. Watch the gifs.
Brandon Truaxe, founder of skincare brand Deciem, has died at 40, CNN. Allegedly he was found, covered in snow, on his terrace, which just gives me chills. How horrible. He clearly was a troubled man.
Listening
Unfortunately, Terror Jr. I have been putting off listening to anything else while getting through my Firefly playlist, but naturally I had to pause for this album. This is their debut full-length album and I’m shrieking, as one of my favorites coworkers would say. It’s such a collection of bops, appropriately. I’ve already discussed their pre-released singles from 2018, but the more recent released songs, “Pretty” and “Kinda Iconic,” kept us wanted even more. Now, to finally have the whole album, well, songs like “Yamaguchi” and “Terrified” just bring it on home.
Watching
Sex Education, Netflix. I put this on my list, but then a coworker raved about it, so I spent all Monday watching this show. Literally all day and I finished it… It is DELIGHTFUL! There were so many moments where I actually laughed out loud, surprising myself. I’m so sad it was only eight episodes. I’ll be hungrily waiting for season two because I need more Eric!
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile trailer. People are saying Ted Bundy is romanticized in this movie, or at least the trailer, but he always has been. When you hear about his atrocious crimes, you also hear about his charm and how handsome he is (I’ve never agreed with that, mind you). They go hand in hand and this is why he was able to get away with it for so long.
Loving
Relatable Work Comics, Liz and Mollie. My new fave Instagram find.
