Weekly Roundup #41: HP and pockets

Weekly Roundup #41: HP and pockets

Things got a little hectic between work and life so this roundup encompasses the last two weeks, rather than just one. How was everyone’s Labor Day? First football Sunday? Anyone else as pumped as I was for those few chilly days after Labor Day? I was so excited to put on leggings and a hoodie and I’m counting down the days until my flannels can become staples again. Sound off below on what you’re most excited for for fall. Wine festivals, anyone?

Reading

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, J.K. Rowling. I haven't read these books in yeearrs and I'm so happy right now. I'm catching all these little things I didn't catch before, because I was a child, and every big quote that I loved then, still resonates or stands out to me now. "Harry, yer a wizard." ❤️ Also, this is around the 23rd or 24th time I've read this book...so fellow HP fans, let's chat. ⚡️ Side note: I wish they never changed the original covers or illustrations, so iconic.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, J.K. Rowling.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, J.K. Rowling.

An American Marriage, Tayari Jones. This is a heartrending novel about the trials and stereotypes affecting black people and how a simple case of mistaken identification can ruin or, at least, vastly change the trajectory of multiple lives.

23 Tweets People Born After 1999 Will Never Be Able To Understand, Buzzfeed. THIS IS THE GREATEST THING I'VE EVER READ. Fine, I'm exaggerating, but this was, by far, the highlight of my day. I got about six different songs stuck in my head throughout the duration of my scroll and I'm not at all upset about it.

Higher and Higher. Lauren Jauregui Is Flying Solo, Nylon. I love this chick. She's a stunning, talented woman with an ass and fashion sense to match. This article only made me love her more and I can't wait to see what she's going to do. I do kind of feel bad for the other Fifth Harmony girls, the only ones I know are Lauren and Camila, I'm sure they're doing fine, but, it would suck to be overshadowed by previously-equal members of your girl group. Very Beyoncé/Destiny's Child.

A Darker, Deeper Jim Carrey Returns to TV With ‘Kidding,’ The New York Times. I wanted to watch this show before I knew anything about it, simply because I saw Carrey was in it and I adore him. Now, I'm nervous to see the darker sides of his character, knowing it could be tangled with the real life of someone I would hate to know is upset.

Mac Miller Dead at 26: TMZ, Spin. I loved him in college, still know all the words to "Smile Back." My heart breaks for him and all those who loved him.

Mac Miller Dead at 26, Rolling Stone. I was obsessed with “Blue Slide Park” in college. He actually came for a free concert my sophomore or junior year and no one would go with me because they didn’t know him well enough and I always regretted not seeing him. Well, that regret is even stronger now.

The Perfectionist, Vulture. This article breaks my heart.

How to Organize Your Life This Fall, According to Your Zodiac Sign, Domino. Apparently I should physically purge the clutter in my home, which sounds amazing to me, or give myself the option to say no, which also sounds fantastic (I’m a cusp baby). I’ll probably be doing both of these this weekend.

The 7 Best Nail Art Ideas We’ve Seen at NYFW, PureWow. Chipped mani! This is my jam! If I painted my nails…which I don’t because my nails chip so easily. Finally my fragile nails are en vogue! 💅🏼

How To Smell Good In Every Possible Way, Into the Gloss. Ok, I’m not getting a body toner or oil, but you better believe everything else on this list is in my home and in the same scent family as either vanilla or coconut.

Get a Handle on Your Makeup Collection, Racked. I have a "ridiculous" amount of products in my beauty collection (according to my boyfriend). This was helpful, but...really, I think I just need a professional.

Women’s Pockets are Inferior, The Pudding. There’s a reason girls showing off their dresses with pockets has spawned multiple memes. They’re so. fucking. niiiiice. Somewhere to put your hands?? Maybe not have to carry a purse?? Yeah, they’re great. Now, women carry more shit, therefore, we should have the bigger pockets! Wtf.

LPA And Revolve Release And Quickly Cancel Fatphobic Sweatshirts, Nylon. Neerrrp. Nerp. Why are y’all so obtuse?? Of course this would not fly!

Prairie dresses — yes, prairie dresses — are the most provocative thing in fashion right now, The Washington Post. I mean…they have been. I don’t hate them. In fact, I love a long, flowy, moody floral dress, but the ones in this article, from Batsheva Hay, are just hideous. In my opinion.

How the World of Skincare is Encouraging More Women to Explore Science, The Verge. Love, love, luuuurrve this!!

Ben Affleck out as DC’s Batman following Henry Cavill’s rumored Superman exit, New York Post. Gimme a Michael B. Jordan Superman 😍🤤 Then I might actually watch a Superman movie.

Next Gen Drag Queens Have An Amazing Young Role Model, Nylon. All these kids truly are AMAZING. And the idea that there are people out there who harass, insult and threaten them because they’re simply being who they are is despicable and disgusting.

The massive plastic-cleaning device invented by a 24-year-old is headed out to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — here's what the launch looked like, Business Insider. Naturally plastic pollution needs to stop, but we also need to clean up what’s already been dumped on our planet. I so so sooo hope this works. 🤞🏼

California Pledges 100% Clean Electricity by 2045, Time. I’m so jealous…can our whole country get our shit together and do this? Despite the Trump administration’s attempts to kill our whole planet single-handedly.

At U.S. Open, power of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka is overshadowed by an umpire’s power play, The Washington Post. I didn’t love the tone of this piece, but this has been a much talked about match (obviously) and I agree with the writer’s overall point.

Sam Darnold gets busy after first-play pick-six, helps Jets rout Lions, ESPN. Yeah. This game? This was a shocker. And Darron Lee was on one. My pick ‘em pool score would’ve really appreciate a Lions win, but I’ll take a crazy entertaining game like this over a win this week, I suppose.

UN chief: World must prevent runaway climate change by 2020, AP. Well, if that’s not one of the most terrifying headlines you’ve ever read, we need to talk. So you can teach me your ways because I’m freaking out. We’re already way off track and the US’ current admin is not helping. Want reasons? “India’s worst monsoon flooding in recent history, almost 3,000 deaths from Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico last year, disappearing Arctic sea ice, some wildfires so big that they send ash around the world, oceans becoming more acidic threatening food chains, and high carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere threatening food security for billions of people.” Let’s save our home. 🌎🌍🌏

Florence strengthens to Category 4, takes aim at Carolinas, AP. This makes me so anxious. I feel like Maria, Harvey, Irma and Jose just happened…we literally can’t afford another natural disaster.

Hurricane Florence: How to prepare for the "monster" storm, CBS. It’s gone from a Category 4 to a Category 1, but it’s still dangerous because of the possibility of deadly flooding.

Apple launches iPhone XS, XS Max and XR – as it happened, The Guardian. I honestly hardcore skimmed this because I don’t care, but figured some of you readers might be interested. Also, we played it in my cafe at work and I saw them showcasing some new way to game with your friends, but, again, don’t care. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Jeff Bezos Announces Launch of $2 Billion Charity to Help With Education and Homelessness, Fortune. I mean he’s valued at $164 billion, he had to do something.

What to Know About the Suspected Gas Explosions in Massachusetts, Time. “State police said they have responded to 70 fires, explosions and reports of gas odors connected with the issue.” Holy shit.

Men Get the First, Last and Every Other Word on Earnings Calls, Bloomberg. Stop. Talking. Over. Me. Studies have also found they talk more in all kinds of group settings. There was also a very sad graph included, which shows rising rates, but at an incredibly slow pace. “ ‘One could surmise that male executives are more prone to speaking simply to hear themselves speak.’ [Prattle Chief Executive Officer Evan Schnidman said.]”

E-cigarette use is an 'epidemic,' FDA chief says, NBC. When will kids stop thinking smoking is cool? Cigarettes are disgusting and while e-cigarettes are decidedly less foul, everyone knows how bad smoking is for you. So why is it still interchangeable with the “cool rebel” stereotype?

Sexual allegation against Kavanaugh referred to FBI by top Democrat, NBC. “ ‘Not until the eve of his confirmation has Sen. Feinstein or anyone raised the specter of new ‘information’ about him,’ Kupec said, accusing Democrats of an "11th-hour attempt to delay" Kavanaugh a seat on the high court.” Yeah, exactly. Let’s keep delaying.

What to Know About Reported Meetings Between Trump Administration Officials and Venezuelan Coup Plotters, Time. I agree we should do our best to help countries in need, but supporting an overthrow? Don’t know about that one. I’m glad we didn’t ultimately agree to aid the coup because that would have been extremely messy.

Trump falsely claims nearly 3,000 Americans in Puerto Rico ‘did not die,’ CNN. Just...what an idiot. I really have nothing more to say. That was the first word that came to mind after finishing this article.

Concerns missing Chinese actor Fan Bingbing has fallen foul of authorities, The Guardian. Creepy…also, this social responsibility report is bizarre.

Native American tribes sue over Keystone XL pipeline, The Hill. It’s baaaack. And there’s a reason it’s not going away.

Today, the EU will vote on the future of the internet (again), The Verge. “EU watchers say it’s impossible to predict the outcome of today’s votes, and, whatever happens, we’re still a long way from actual legislation.” Say no to Article 13.

Google is fighting a big, messy battle over whether expanding the 'right to be forgotten' amounts to censorship, Business Insider. Fuck you, Google, we should at least have the option to request a scrub of our own personal, private information. Particularly after a significant passage of time.

EPA proposes rollback of Obama-era laws on methane leak inspections and repairs, CNN. The EPA is a FUCKING JOKE these days. Also, mind you, they even admitted the rollback might "degrade air quality and adversely affect health." So they can go fuck themselves. As can the current administration.

Number of Detained Migrant Children Reaches Record High, Slate. This is due to a backlog of cases and the fact that potential sponsors/relatives are increasingly too frightened to come for the children as many may be undocumented.

Bolton: International Criminal Court Will Face Repercussions If Americans Prosecuted, NPR. Excuuuuse me, but if Americans are committing heinous acts abroad under the cover of war (definitely not saying this is necessarily true, calm down), I absolutely think they should be punished. You can’t threaten an international court for looking into possible war crimes. If we didn’t do anything wrong, why would we be worried?

Dallas officer accused of killing a man in wrong apartment could still face murder charge: Prosecutor, ABC. Well, no shit, because what the fuck? She walked into his apartment thinking it was hers and then shot him “thinking he was an intruder?” Who does that?? And if she gets off, that sets a precedent for any murderer who wants to use this bullshit excuse.

Trump signs order that would impose sanctions for election interference, ABC. Hi, Russia.

'No need for birth control': Tanzanian president's views cause outrage, The Guardian. He said “that outsiders who promote birth control are giving bad advice, and that people who use contraceptives are lazy, according to local media.” ….uhhhh, go fuck ya’self, Magufuli.

Romania parliament votes in favor of man/woman marriage only, AP. Three MILLION Romanians signed a petition demanding the constitution be changed to redefine marriage as a union between a man and a woman…CAN WE JUST HAVE SOME POSITIVE, PROGRESSIVE CHANGE, PEOPLE?!

Pope Francis summons bishops to Vatican for abuse prevention summit, PBS. Am I the only one without much hope for any significant changes?

Swedish election: deadlock as far right makes gains – as it happened, The Guardian. The far-right, neo-Nazi party received 17.6 percent, 5 percent more than in 2014. So that’s concerning…

Hungary’s Orban vows to defy EU pressure ahead of unprecedented vote, Reuters. Unprecedented because no one has dares to be such massive, blatant assholes until now…

China Is Detaining Muslims in Vast Numbers. The Goal: ‘Transformation.’ The New York Times.

Egyptian court upholds death sentences for 75 people over 2013 demonstration, CNN. “Of the 75 people, 44 are in jail and 31 are on the run.”

Les Moonves is out at CBS after harassment allegations, corporate battle, CNN. Later, predator.

Listening

There’s a Honey, Pale Waves.

Swagger playlist, Spotify. I came across this playlist, which all the below songs are from, and am reeeaally feelin’ it.

Wicked Ones, Dorothy.

Troublemaker, Devon Gilfillian.

You Worry Me, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. I saw them at Firefly (at the intimate Treehouse set, surrounded by the forest 😍) and they blew me away with their energy. Love this group.

Watching

The Good Place, NBC. This is a delightfully dark show. If you need something to watch while folding mountains of laundry (anyone else?), this is a great pick.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser, Netflix. I’ve been hearing about Noah Centineo constantly since “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” (still have yet to watch this one) came out and now I get the obsession…hot damn.

Loving

City Lips, City Beauty. This is a gloss infused with hyaluronic acid (hello, plump and hydrated lips) and comes in 20 shades, including nine shimmery and 10 opaque. I’m currently loving “Dusty Rose,” a cool-toned deep mauve. Anyone remember DuWop Cosmetics’ Lip Venom and the tingling feeling that came with each application? This product delivers a very similar feeling and I think my lips do see a bit of a plumping effect. Mostly I’m just really into the color and the look. Also, bonus, it smells really good. I will caution, the gloss is a bit sticky when applying, but that subsides after the first layer is on.

Selling

Swiss Ice Crystal Eye Cream, La Prairie. I’m selling this product on eBay if anyone is interested in a luxe product for half the price. 🤷🏼‍♀️
