Weekly Roundup #31: Sheet masks and Gov Ball
This is a shorter article this week. We were obviously out last Monday for Memorial Day and then I was out Friday as well to attend Gov Ball so I really only gave myself three days of news here. But who knows, I didn't really mind a lighter news week, and maybe you won't either! As always, you can let me know your thoughts in the comments! Speaking of Gov Ball, I had a weekend I'll never forget. I'll be posting a recap later this week, but, all in all, it was an epic weekend and I'm so ready for Firefly next week!

How to Murder Your Life, Cat Marnell.
The 9 Simple Skincare Mistakes You're Making, Into the Gloss. "You are what you eat," aka my skin is a sugary, cheesy mess. I'm also definitely treating blemishes the wrong way, but I already knew that. Someone help me stop picking!
Ben and Dara Are in Love...and Nothing Else Matters, Vanity Fair. I'm rereading Cat Marnell's memoir, in which she mentions this article (it's from 2007), and I find it incredible this was an actual long form article in Vanity Fair. The privilege these kids have (and abuse)...it's gross, honestly. However, it was very well-written by Nancy Jo Sales of the famous "The Suspects Wore Louboutins" (and recipient of the infamous voicemail).
The Original Beauty Influencer Says That Sheet Masks Are A Complete Scam, Refinery29. I have so many Paula's Choice products in my "beauty products to buy" list. Also, agreed on the sheet masks. Will still keep doing them to force myself to lay down and relax.
Dress Like You Were Rich Enough to Get Stranded with Fyre Festival Merch, Paper.
Ethan Cutkosky Talks Playing Carl In ‘Shameless’, Summer Camp, & Conspiracy Theories, Live for Live Music. Aw, Carl gets it. We can jam, dude.
How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People, The Cut. I read the Vanity Fair story on this a month or so ago, but this story is just so provocative. I suppose it's lucky for me, I don't even have enough money to venture the places Delvey picked up her marks. 🤷🏼♀️
Vogue Grifter Arrested for Allegedly Stealing $50,000, The Cut. The balls of this girl.
The Stories Of New York's Glamorous Grifters Are The Perfect Ocean's 8 Pregame, Refinery29. Yeah, I clearly went on a little kick after reading the Delvey story. But, as the article says, we find these kinds of stories fascinating.
This New Blueberry Lemonade Beer Is the LaCroix of Alcohol (*Buys 10 Cases*), PureWow. Ok, the boyfriend saw this in the liquor store this past weekend and suggested I try it. I went with a cider variety pack because, I don't know, was feeling that more for the #boatlife, but now it sounds like I'm going to have to go pick up a case of this, STAT. Dare I say there's a new summer beer?
When the Thirst Is Real: The Dudes of Insecure Go to the Gym, GQ. The thirst is real indeed.
Who Is DiaryOfAFitMommyOfficial, The Woman All Over Your Instagram Feed? Refinery29. I see her EVERYWHERE. On the feeds of nearly EVERY "Hollywood" celeb I follow. She's on top of it ha. But it's true, it's not her fault she's the comment pulled out every time.
Mike Rempel Talks Lotus’ New Album & Evolution, Side Projects, Disc Jam, & More, Live for Live Music. Clearly I had a few weeks of interviews backed up here...but 20 YEARS of Lotus! That's crazy. This guy was a pretty fascinating interview, by the way, if you're into this type of music. I love reading/hearing about possible future collabs, even if they're *just* on stage.
Dear Sun: I'm Breaking Up With You, COOLS. I've been telling all my friends (and boyfriend, he just won't listen) for years now (total exaggeration, but a while!), SUNSCREEN IS KEY!! Sunscreen over everything, babes! Plus, this is a fun little read.
18 Little Things You're Doing That Piss Restaurant Employees Off, Buzzfeed. If we close at 11, do 👏🏼 not 👏🏼 come 👏🏼 in 👏🏼 at 👏🏼 10:50, especially if you're going to order full meals for everyone in the group and then camp out until 1 am. Server cannot leave until their section is clean so that mean they have to wait for your asses to get up and go, even if you paid and (hopefully) tipped an hour ago.
This App Delivers Leftover Food to the Hungry, Instead of the Trash, Fast Company. I. LOVE. THIS. I've always thought of the extra food restaurants have at the end of the night (I worked in the industry so I know how much can go to waste), but I didn't take it any further than my guilt. Thank god there are better people than me out there! Note: Unfortunately this app is only available in Atlanta right now, but here's hoping it's successful and able to expand to other areas.
Adam Deitch Talks Jazz Fest, ATL Hip-Hop, & New Lettuce Albums, Live for Live Music. I saw Lettuce at a late night ACL show a few years ago, hooolly music, killed it.
Meet Five Female Tattoo Artists Transforming the Industry, Nylon. Particularly digging the work of Rosa Perr and Tati Compton, but I've been following Ash Glynn on Instagram for a few years now. Hoping one day I can have my own "soul tattoo."
Retta Says Taylor Swift Tried To Cut Her In Bathroom Line Once, Nylon. 1. I love Retta. 2. This is fantastic. 3. The embedded tweet gives me life 😂
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Are Reportedly Dating, Harper's Bazaar. Wut.
Q&AZN: Bread Face Sits Down With Banana Magazine, Milk.xyz. Her Insta bio is "giving the people something they didn't ask for" and there are 206K people who follow anywhere. The world is a crazy place.
Balenciaga's "T-shirt Shirt" is exactly that, but it'll cost you $1,300, Mashable. Nope. Why. I'm actually almost angry they think they can sell an ugly-ass shirt like this for any kind of price ha.
Changes in Spousal Relationships over the Marital Life Course, Social Networks and the Life Course. I was honestly scared there were going to say couples reach peak happiness at around two or five years haha. Spoiler alert: You gotta make it to 20!
Sound Meditation Did More For Me Than Seven Years of Therapy, COOLS. As someone who loves allowing my mind to be "taken over" by music, whether through my headphones, record player or at a live show, color me intrigued.
Judge Won't Let Kesha Escape Dr. Luke Contract, The Hollywood Reporter. I cannot imagine having to work with someone during all of this, how awful and, honestly? Super awkward. Just let her be freeee!
Serena Williams wore catsuit at French Open for 'all the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy,' USA Today. "All the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and have to come back and try to be fierce, in a middle of everything. That's what this represents. You can't beat a cat suit, right?" Queeeen!!
The Curious Case of Bryan Colangelo and the Secret Twitter Account, The Ringer. What a shady f***.
Cardi B Just Realized Childish Gambino & Donald Glover Are the Same Person, Billboard. Omg, Cardi. 🤦🏼♀️
‘Uncle Drew’: Branding Vehicle or Feature Film? Yes, New York Times. I actually find this fascinating. That a brand can turn a popular marketing campaign into a 90-minute long, well, ad, but one people are actually excited to see, is crazy. The Lego movie franchise is a great example of this. They did this so well, I would be curious to know what their sales stats were after each release.
In One Year As A Journalist, I’ve Lost Track Of All The Mass Shootings I’ve Covered, Refinery29. This is horrifying group of statistics: "Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that 2018 has been deadlier for schoolchildren than deployed service members. The Gun Violence Archive reports that the number of teens ages 12 to 17 killed or injured by gun violence has already reached 1049. In 2017 that number totaled 3,240. That is more than the population of my entire public high school."
Grand Jury Indicts Harvey Weinstein in Rape Case, The Hollywood Reporter. Heyooo!
ABC cancels 'Roseanne' after star's racist Twitter rant, CNN. I never liked this show, I don't like Roseanne Barr, the only reasons this is news to me is 1. I'm glad networks are showing that you can't be a shithead and still have your own show and 2. One of my friends loves this show and was just talking about it being picked up again so I'm sure she'll be really upset by this news. I applaud ABC for not choosing money or ratings over human decency.
Ambien maker Sanofi: 'Racism is not a known side effect,' CNN. Lol. Nice try, Roseanne. Stay woke, people. 😉
Stanley Cup Final Series Breakdown: Washington Capitals vs. Vegas Golden Knights, Sports Illustrated. It's the Knights' inaugural season. To repeat, INAUGURAL SEASON. And they're at the Stanley Cup.
Russian journalist reported dead shows up alive at news conference, Ukrainian officials say they faked his death, ABC. That is so scary and sounds like a Bond or Bourne movie.
EU Proposes a Total Ban on Plastic Forks and Other Products, Bloomberg. Yes, yes, yes. I'm so here for this.
Study estimates higher death toll in Puerto Rico post-Maria, AP. Researchers "estimated that up to 4,600 more deaths than usual occurred" vs. the official toll of 64. More than two times Hurricane Katrina's death toll.
Act IV: Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors set for fourth consecutive NBA Finals meeting, NBA. I love me some Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, but, man, this is getting old, guys.
Liege shooting: Two police officers and civilian dead in Belgium, BBC. The civilian "was going to qualify as a primary school teacher in the next few weeks," ugh. My heart.
Trump signs bill for terminal patients to try unproven drugs, AP. As I've said countless times, not an expert, just a normal person. I definitely see the drawbacks, but, honestly, I'm actually okay with this, with what I know so far. These are patients with life-threatening conditions who don't have a lot of time anyway or have already exhausted other options. If they're willing to test experimental drugs, I say it's their prerogative.
MPs call for Theresa May to permit poll on abortion in Northern Ireland, The Guardian. It would be extremely difficult to be a pro-choice person in Northern Ireland, watching the recent historic vote in Ireland, knowing it still didn't change anything for you.
Supreme Court rejects challenge to Arkansas abortion law, The Hill. My home state—forever a champion of women's rights...
1 Charge Against Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens Dropped As He Resigns From Office, NPR. When will these politicians realize they are in the public eye. Be. Smart. Don't. Be. An asshole.
Flash floods ravage Ellicott City, Maryland; National Guardsman goes missing, NBC. The videos are shocking and send second-hand fear and anxiety racing through your body as you watch people rushed through the streets. Hoping they find Eddison Hermond.
Subtropical Storm Alberto makes landfall in Florida; 2 journalists killed in North Carolina, CNN. Storms, flash flooding and possible tornadoes...perfect way to start your summer. And two journalists risked their lives, and lost, to get the coverage.
The U.S. lost track of 1,475 immigrant children last year. Here’s why people are outraged now. The Washington Post. If you're pissed off about #WhereAreTheChildren, read this to make sure you're properly aware of all the details and nuances. It's when we take something off the cuff that misinformation is spread and unfortunate repercussions can occur. Don't get me wrong, I think it's horrible, but, to clarify, these 1,475 children were not separated from their parents at the border.
The feds lost — yes, lost — 1,475 migrant children, USA Today. I would be one of the first to throw this all on the incompetency of the HHS, but, again, we need to make sure we're fully educating themselves. In this case, there should have been better policies put in place and we need to make sure we're not sacrificing our humanity for better border security, as stated in this op-ed. It seems the HHS is just flying by the seat of their pants.
Ivanka Trump’s Snuggle with Son Lands Her in the Middle of Outrage Over Lost Migrant Children, People. One of the tweets said it best, "Do these people have any capacity of anything other than being incredibly self-absorbed?" I think not, sir.
Top Republicans dismiss President Trump's 'Spygate' claims, ABC. Yeah, duh.
Germany's far-right supporters outnumbered by protesters in Berlin, Reuters. The divide is clearly as bad as it is here in the US. Also, I love this: "These included one by the city’s club scene, which put on a techno music party, aiming to “Bass the AfD away” with music blasting from speakers on 20 public address trucks." To "drown out the racist speeches." ❤️
Get Screened Earlier For Colorectal Cancer, Urges American Cancer Society, NPR. Woof.
U.S. Holds Off on New North Korea Sanctions as Summit Talks Progress, Wall Street Journal. I said last week I was giving up keeping track until they were in a room together...looks like I was right to say so.
Listening
Blue Light, Kelela.
Hey Now, The Regrettes.
Lil Thing, Knox Fortune.
Watching
"Fall In Line," Christina Aguilera ft. Demi Lovato. Damn. This was fucking good. I actually got chills during the chorus the first time Demi joins in.
"Girls Like You," Maroon 5 ft. Cardi B. Ok, I loved this too. Highly recommend watching both of these, maybe this one first and then get your fem heart pumping with "Fall in Line."
