Weekly Roundup #23: New nudes and pasta diets
Just a heads up. Because I was out most of last week, I'm catching up on all my Skimm and other newsletter emails so there will be a lot of "older" news in this week's roundup. But, never fear, the "newsier" news will be mostly toward the bottom of the piece. How many times can I say news in this intro?
Reading
Sing, Unburied, Sing, Jesmyn Ward.
The Wife Between Us, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.
50 Years Later, Remembering King, and the Battles That Outlived Him, The New York Times. " 'I think we should have listened to him then,” Mr. Branch [Taylor Branch, the Pulitzer-Prize winning historian] said. “We really ought to listen to him now.' "

Scientists harvest 1st vegetables in Antarctic greenhouse, AP. I'll take my salad with a side of frostbite. But really, this is pretty fucking cool. When we will kill our planet in 2080, we could possibly still have fresh produce out in space or on other planets.
Why Do We Think Serial Killers All Wear the Same Glasses? Racked. Interesting read.
Live Nation Rules Music Ticketing, Some Say With Threats, The New York Times. Ticket service fees are RIDICULOUS, sometimes almost doubling the price of the ticket itself. It's insane. And if Live Nation is really threatening venues to use Ticketmaster...well...it's not like we can boycott them because then I couldn't go to any concerts...but I would hope the Department of Justice would thoroughly punish them. It's not fair to the venues, the artist and, selfishly, the fans. If a Live Nation venue is chosen over a more convenient venue, it's just not fair for the fans trying to see their favorite artists.
You May Live Longer By Severely Restricting Calories, Scientists Say, NPR. This sounds like my nightmare.
What It’s Like to Go Through Life As a Really Beautiful Woman, The Cut. I've written about this topic before, in a similar vein, but, god, this piece is truly heart-wrenching. The last sentence...

How Feminism Plays Into the Opposing Makeup Trends We're Seeing Everywhere Right Now, Fashionista. I love this. Makeup of every style is an expression of the person wearing it and just because you like playing with makeup and choose to wear a heavier amount does not mean you're not a feminist. I hate those comments people post saying, "I thought you were a feminist, but you're wear a short skirt and a ton of makeup." Yeah...because they choose to, which is a part of what feminism means. Being able to choose what we wear, how we look and dress, what jobs we have, without being criticized or told we have to look a certain way. You. Do. YOU, girlfriend!
How Betty Who Is Redefining What it Means to Be an "Iconic Blonde," Allure. Seeing her in June and I couldn't be more excited. I've followed this girl for a while and I'm pumped to finally see her live. This article confirmed all my feelings about her.

A Scholarship Was Supposed To Change Her Life—Here's Why It Got Derailed, Refinery29. So. Sad. The last paragraphs...ugh, gut punch right there.
The Man Who Spent $100K To Remove A Lie From Google, NPR. I read an article on a reporter who Google deemed deceased after a case of mistaken identity (she had the same name as the deceased). It’s scary to realize we have absolutely no real control over what appears under our own search results. Can we take a note from Europe and make it easier to do so? You would think, if you can prove it’s malicious or wrongfully defamatory, it could easily be removed. Maybe deny that right to serial killers and rapists alone...
Eating Pasta Linked to Weight Loss in New Study, Newsweek. Well if that isn't the best news I've ever heard, I don't know what is!

How #MeToo Shook the Yoga World, Elle.
Walmart Removing Cosmopolitan From Checkout Aisles Is A Distortion Of #MeToo, Refinery29. WTF. How dare the NCOSE use #metoo to push its harmful agenda.
EPA To Gut The Only Major Federal Rule To Cut Climate Pollution From Vehicles, Huffington Post. I was just in California and my brother and I were shocked when a truck drove by, spewing black smoke, and this is with the state's strict emission tests. We're already on a fast track to global devastation. If the EPA weakens this rule, which, by the way, is far from being "too strict" considering current climate change and global pollution, we're simply killing the planet faster than ever. If anything, we need stricter rules. We've already done so much irreversible damage, I dread to think of the state of the planet after this joke of an Environmental Protection Agency head is finished.

Teachers Are Marching Ahead Of Their Unions, From Oklahoma To Arizona, NPR. I've said it before and I'll say it again, more simply. Teachers. Deserve. More. "There were days when I had more kids than chairs," he [Noah Karvelis, one of the grassroots organizers of Arizona Educators United] told NPR. Today, he has seven working keyboards to teach about 40 kids how to play piano. "Every single kid that I've ever had deserves more than this. There are kids who are not being given a fair chance here."
Sinclair Broadcast Group Faces Backlash Over Scripted Promos: ‘This Is Extremely Dangerous to Our Democracy,’ Variety. Yeah, this is, Sinclair. This is so scary. Talk about biased media.
Israeli Military Kills 15 Palestinians in Confrontations on Gaza Border, The New York Times. I can't even imagine living like this, knowing that a peaceful protest will do nothing, in fact, will likely get you killed. One can only hope May 15 will not prove worse.

China raises tariffs on US pork, fruit in trade dispute, AP. Dude, I can't afford for green apple prices to go up.
Woman At Stephon Clark Vigil Is Struck By Sheriff's Vehicle, NPR. I certainly wouldn't have touched any vehicles for fear of being blamed, but, if I were in that sheriff's department, I would seriously be playing it safe right now. Particularly during that type of event.
The Best Time to Buy Flights, Based on 917 Million Airfares, Lifehacker. TLDR: "In Winter you want to try for 62 days in advance, Spring 90 days in advance, Summer 47 days in advance, and Fall 69 days in advance, on average." Trump pushes out Shulkin at VA, nominates Jackson as replacement, Reuters. Jackson was actually in the Navy with my dad. I don't know about a personal physician stepping in as the VA Secretary or his "clean bill of health" for Trump, but my dad said he was a good doctor sooo maybe this one won't get kicked out and will help clean up the garbage fire that is the VA?

2020 census to add question on citizenship status, NBC. I do actually get the reason for adding, but, I completely agree it will scare off immigrants and we'll have a likely, very, inaccurate result regarding our population, demographics and more. Also, will this question then be used to hunt down said illegal immigrants?
