Weekly Roundup #76: Euphoria and finstas

Reading

Women and Children First, Gill Paul. The middle to the end really trailed off for me, but the beginning, about the Titanic, was fascinating and horrifically tragic.

Checking Out, Nick Spalding. I thought this was an absurdist novel when I got it, for some reason. Turns out it’s really just absurdly stupid.

These Women Are Changing New York’s D.J. Game. Watch Them Work. The New York Times. This is such a cool piece. “The future is nonbinary and inclusive.” ✊🏼

What the Ideal Instagram Influencer Looks Like, Paper. “Brands approaching the vast majority of Instagram's top influencers should be prepared to spend at least $20,000 for a product endorsement.” Gag.

Working From Home? Here's How to Avoid Bingewatching a Whole Season of Stranger Things While You Do It, Girls’ Night In. I’ve found it’s helpful to turn on my record player. It’s something I really only do when I’m alone so having that little excitement of putting on a new vinyl acts as enough of a distraction so I’m not tempted by other things, like TV, while I work.

I was a fast-food worker. Let me tell you about burnout. Vox. No shit office workers aren’t the only one. Do you know how difficult the restaurant industry/customer-facing industries are on an employee’s mental and physical health? Probably not, unless you’ve been in it at some point.

Why Finstas Are a Safe Sanctuary on Social Media, Allure. I don’t have the energy for a third Insta (personal and work), but I can definitely see the pros, especially for the LGBTQ+ community.

Jamie Lynn Spears Weighs In on a 'Zoey 101' Reboot, Paper. Oh. My. God. PLEASE!

Artist Portraits From Pitchfork Music Festival 2019, Pitchfork. Hi, Clairo and Snail Mail 👋🏼

Is Peak TV Really a Bonanza for Female Comics? That’s a Laugh, The New York Times. Basically, television is bullshit for women.

Only 1 person RSVP'd to a party for a boy with autism, so a high school football team showed up to celebrate, CNN. Got my cry in for the morning with this piece. A beautiful reminder that not ALL the news is garbage and about trash humans and depressing as fuck.

Couples Are Planning Their Weddings Before Getting Engaged & Yes, It Works, Refinery29. I mean, I probably won’t have specific vendors picked out necessarily, but…let’s just say my Wedding Google Doc is eleven pages long.

In ‘Euphoria,’ The Beauty Looks Are Filled With Hidden Meanings, Nylon. I 👏🏼 love 👏🏼 makeup 👏🏼 as 👏🏼 self 👏🏼 expression!

Cheez-It and a boxed wine company are teaming up. Here's why, CNN. Gimme the white cheddar and rosé, please!

Instagram Influencers Are Afraid They'll Have To Work More If We Can't See Their Like Counts, Nylon. Lol, eight hours a day? That sounds heavenly.

Botox, Fillers & Facelifts: The French-Girl Beauty Secrets They Don't Want You To Know, Refinery29. They still get plastic surgery, but conservatively. They get procedures with the “French touch.” Now that sounds like my kind of cosmetic surgery.

Forever 21 Is Under Fire for Reportedly Putting Diet Bars in Plus-Size Customers' Orders, Allure. I’M SORRY?!

The Harriet Tubman Biopic Is Here and It’s Already Generating Oscar Buzz, Newsweek. But, actually, HOW has it not already been made??

The Summers’ Hottest Takes, The New York Times. A fun, interactive read where you can vote on some of the most *controversial* opinions of the summer.

Macy's says it will pull 'mom jeans' plates from stores after furious customers accused them of 'fat shaming,' Business Insider. Um…yeah. WHO thought this would be a good idea?? Also, as someone who wears mom jeans often, they are terrible for stuffing yourself. That high waist is not forgiving.

‘Riverdale’ Costars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart Split After Nearly 2 Years of Dating, Us Weekly. That was the sound of my heart breaking…💔

Cole Sprouse Is the One Who Broke Up with Lili Reinhart, Cosmopolitan. Why, Cole?? WHY! But this made me feel better about it not being a forever thing lol.

Lili Reinhart Reacts to Cole Sprouse Breakup Rumors: 'None of You Know Sh**,' Entertainment Tonight. Guys, this week has been a ride lol.

The Millennial Wedding Trend We Keep Seeing That Baby Boomers Hate, PureWow. Definitely makes it easier if you’re planning a destination wedding AND you get that actual moment all to yourselves.

7 New Films to Watch, Wonderland. I’d never heard of “How to Build a Girl” and now I really want to see it. I’m also very curious about “Honey Boy”…

12 Times the Jonas Brothers' Banter Turned an Interview Into a Roast Session, PopSugar. They do have a pretty amusing (read: cute) rapport.

Listening

Fever Dream, Of Monsters and Men. It’s here!! I’ve been waiting four years for their next album and July 26 was the day!

Watching

100 Years of Updos, Allure. I fucking love these videos. If y’all haven’t seen any of this 100 Years of Beauty series, go find it and watch immediately!

Euphoria, HBO. Is it just me or is this show glamorizing drug use? Because that’s extremely dangerous for impressionable teens to see. I mean, even I was watching and thinking, wow, this kind of, almost makes me want to go back to high school in a weird, painful way. I also hate to think that this is what teen life is like now…nudes everywhere, forced into giving blow jobs so they don’t seem like a prude. Being a teenager, especially a female teenage, is fucking hard enough without being shamed by random strangers for not wanting to take your top off.

Silicon Valley, HBO. We’re finally all caught up and I need more Pied Piper!!

Loving

B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum, Drunk Elephant. I’ll have to do an actual review on this product but, for now, I have oily skin and this is the first thing I’ve tried all summer that’s actually showing me a difference in that midday sheen. Highly recommend!
