Weekly Roundup #60: Birthdays and bedtime

Weekly Roundup #60: Birthdays and bedtime

I celebrated my birthday this weekend—27, woof. I officially am a part of the “late twenties” club and it’s kind of bumming me out. I always thought I’d be fine with turning 30, but I’m realizing, as I get closer to it, I may end up having a third-life crisis. It’s a little more nerve-wracking than I expected, getting into this bracket. 26 was one thing, but 27 feels so much older…anyone have any advice or wisdom to impart? I’ll take anything! In the meantime, hope you’re enjoying a day off work and, if not, hope you’re almost done! Happy Presidents Day, all!

Reading

The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt. This is a reread, but one I’m very excited about. So much happens in this book, i’m pretty sure I forgot 80% of it.

Thinking of getting a tattoo? Check out these delicate designs to inspire your choice, Glamour. I’ve been wanting little, tiny finger tattoos for about two or three years and I feel like my birthday this year is the time to treat myself. (Sorry, Mom and Dad.)

How a recipe goes viral on Instagram, Vox. I remember Alison Roman’s cookie recipe, but not the stew. Didn’t try either, but I’m really feeling that stew. “Millennials love food, but they also love staying in and want to save money, so they’re cooking more — and then they’re documenting their creations on Instagram. By sharing on social media and spreading recipes to their friends, they help get the viral snowball rolling. But ease, healthfulness, quality ingredients, and taste are still of utmost importance in a recipe, and the most viral recipes are likely to have some combination of those elements.“ Don’t forget inexpensive!

What Your Myers-Briggs Type Says About Your Bedtime Routine, Apartment Therapy. I’m an ENFJ so apparently I’m most likely to have a routine, which, I suppose, somewhat works for me. What are you? Does yours fit?

Nickelodeon Is Reviving ‘All That’ With Kenan Thompson as Executive Producer, Variety. I don’t know how I feel about this… It’s cool Kenan Thompson will be an executive producer, but I feel bringing this back could be tough. How many remakes of a truly beloved, zeitgeist-y show are actually successful? Although I’d love to see an Amanda Bynes cameo.

Gift Cards Are the New Sympathy Cards, The New York Times. Traditionalists are horrified by this, I’m sure. But it’s honestly super thoughtful. With the casseroles of yore, you’re risking the fact that this friend may not be able (dietary restrictions) or want (because who really wants tuna noodle casserole?) to eat it. Also, who can eat six casseroles, by themselves, in the amount of time it takes before they all start to go bad? And then, you’re giving them a dish they have to wash and somehow get back to you, along with the multiple other dishes crowding their fridge and kitchen. With a Seamless, etc. gift card, you’re giving them the freedom to choose their favorite meal when they need that comfort the most. Not to mention, if it’s a long-distance loved one, you’re able to reach out to them in a way you may not have before if you didn’t live in the same town. It may not be Emily Post’s first choice, but I appreciate the progression.

Let Me Tell You About My Friend Maria Butina — Who Might Be A Russian Spy, Refinery29. I was kind of hoping this would be like The Cut’s piece on Anna Delvey, alas, not nearly as good. It basically went nowhere and was more like the writer was working out her history in a journal entry.

17 Tweets That Perfectly Sum Up How Hard It Is To Be An Adult, BuzzFeed. This was so terrifyingly accurate it made me burst out laughing, while also wanting to cry at the same time.

What's An Ambivert & How Can You Tell If You Are One? Refinery29. I was fairly certain I’m an ambivert, but this quiz proved me wrong.

Barrettes Are Everywhere at New York Fashion Week, Elle. Scrunchies, headbands, it was only a matter of time before barrettes came back too. I like the word ones, but you’re crazy if you think I’m spending over $15 on a barrette.

Everything That Will Be Trending Next Fall, Nylon. Ruffles, lilac (ahead of the trend, thank yooouuu), statement sleeves and asymmetrical necklines. Are any of these actually new? And no, I don’t mean in the way that no fashion is actually new because it’s all cyclical, but aren’t these all from 2018 as well?

7 Fall 2019 Trends From NYFW That Should Be On Your Radar, The Zoe Report. I’ve been having the hardest time finding the perfect pair of snakeskin boots!

The official fast food French fry power rankings, Los Angeles Times. Iiiiiiiii’m sorry…Five Guys got first place?? What kind of nonsense is this?? And Chick-Fil-A’s are 11 out of 19?? Nope. Not having it.

When Weddings Ruin Friendships, The New York Times. It’s ONE DAY, people! Don't go into debt or ruin relationships over it! It’s about the commitment you and your partner are making, everything else is extra.

Everything You Need to Know About Your Sign If You’re an Aquarius, PureWow. These types of things are kind of hit or miss for me since I’m a cusp, but I definitely can agree on the fact that I’m open-minded and stubborn AF. Definitely don’t get the technology obsession with this sign, but I do love to get weird and I want to leave the world better than I found it.

8 Things Every Aquarius Should Have in Her Wardrobe, PureWow. Welp. I have a statement tee. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Esquire criticized for cover on white boy’s struggles during Black History Month,  New York Post. And rightfully so. I mean, come on. Boo hoo for this kid, there’s people with real struggles in this country.

The Curiously Millennial Problem Blindsiding Today's Retail Workers, Refinery29. It’s all about the experience for us. Pop up shops, experiential advertising, we want what is most ‘grammable and things we can actually feel the vibe of for ourselves.
