Weekly Roundup #36: Lip gloss and floral prints
Before I get into this week's post, I just want to give a shout out to Boardman, Oregon. I don't think I know anyone who lives there, I've never even been to Oregon (this is a very short list of states), but y'all are reading and sharing my blog like nobody's business! So thank you, Boardman, it's for readers like you that make me really enjoy writing this blog! Also, to all of you who reached out after reading my ghosting article, thank you. I wrote this to finally close out that chapter of my life and for anyone who may have felt as alone as I did during that time. So cheers to all of you.
Reading
Red Clocks, Leni Zumas.
The Last Time I Lied, Riley Sager. I didn't even know Sager had another book out (if you love thrillers like me, check out Final Girls) until last week. Two days later, I was returning a book to my office book club's pile and saw this one. I wasn't quite finished reading the below Weisberger book, but I had to grab it before someone else did. Sooo glad I did. Sager is brilliant. Look for my next, long overdue book review—it'll be on this one.
Not That I Could Tell, Jessica Strawser. This is like Big Little Lies meets...rich suburbia? It was good, but I'd read the former over this any day.
When Life Gives You Lululemons, Lauren Weisberger. I never read the second book in The Devil Wears Prada series and after reading the summary (and spoilers), I'm glad I didn't. This was better than that one seems, but nothing will ever beat the original. However, let's be real, they're all just fun summer reads.
I Thought I Was Over Music Fests Until I Drove An RV To Firefly Music Festival, Buzzfeed. This was basically a giant ad for an RV site, buuut it made me feel better that when I finally just cannot fathom tenting for another year, I'll still have an adultier option, allowing me to continue to get my fest on.
Face Forward. NYLON’s Beauty Hit List Winners Are Here. Nylon. This is my dream job—testing all these products and writing about them. I'm actually surprised Nylon gave an actual review on only two products in each category, I would think they would do one for each item.
The Lip Gloss Roundtable, Into the Gloss. Maybe this is just me, but I found this really entertaining because how true are all these opinions?
The No-Tipping Point, Eater. I want to kick all these people in the nuts, female and male.
How Publishing’s Floral-Print Trend Came to Rule the World’s Bookshelves, Vanity Fair. It's so sad we have to plan for covers to be seen more in a tiny thumbnail than from a shelf. On a happier note, can I please have a bouquet of books immediately?
Try This Advice If You’re Terrible at Staying in the Moment, The Cut. I thiiink I'm more event-minded, but I could go the other way as well...what are y'all?
Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change, The New York Times. This was perhaps the most depressing and infuriating article I've ever read, so prepare yourselves.
Beyoncé Given Unprecedented Control Over Vogue’s September Issue Cover, Sources Say, Huffington Post. Holy guacamole. Amazing for the photographer, but I wonder why Beyoncé doesn't give Vogue interviews.
Inspirational-Quote Cushions for Different Life Stages, The New Yorker. Can anyone make the debt one for my living room? That or one reading, "Dwight, you ignorant slut!"
Conde Nast Will Reportedly Put a 'For Sale' Sign on Its Brides, Golf Digest and W Magazines, AdAge. Holy Wintour.
The Big Business of Becoming Bhad Bhabie, The New York Times. I'm...I'm speechless that this girl became famous...and is now friends with Billie Eilish, my creepy little love. All because of some cocky prick with a talent for brand marketing. It's fascinating and terrifying that this is our world.
You Can Now Buy Social Media Shout-outs from Celebrities and We’re Not Sure How We Feel About It, PureWow. I took a quick scroll through the "new this week" personalities...I didn't know a single name. But then I scrolled through all their "talent," guys, you can get a shout out from Andy Milonakis. LOL. Or Jan from The Office. Ahhh haha I love it. Someone let me know if you ever do this, I want to hear about your experience.
Can An Heiress Be Self-Made? Paris Hilton Thinks So, Refinery29. I saw her in The Simple Life and then promptly forgot about her, along with Lindsey Lohan, so this was kind of an interesting read. I really appreciated the mention of her infamous sex tape and how she felt about it then and what she thinks of society's progress now.
Bride Fires Bridesmaid in Painfully Awkward Email, and the Reactions Are Brutal, Elle. Hahaha, naaaah, girl.
What Does ‘Off the Record’ Really Mean? The New York Times. In response to Trump taking his previously private meeting with The Times to Twitter, thus voiding their agreement and allowing them to discuss the meeting as well.
Teens Are Debating the News on Instagram, The Atlantic. "Several teens said they hope that flop accounts remain a teen thing." Yeah, me too, because this looks like my nightmare on social media. We're already bombarded with so much shit all day, every day, in the news particularly, I'd prefer to keep my Instagram to aspirational and inspirational posts only, please. However, good for them for trying to create a place outside the comment section to discuss and debate current events.
Instagram Zoo: The Rise and Rise Of Pet Influencers, Forbes. I used to think I would create an account for my future dog, but now it's like everyone and their mother (literally) has one and I'm over it. I'd rather like other people's photos of a teacup pig or adorable Frenchie than waste the time creating the perfect shoot for my pet. I'll save the likes for my own page, sorry, furbaby. 😉
'Charlie's Angels' Reboot: Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska Join Kristen Stewart, The Hollywood Reporter. One, awesome, can't wait for another Banks' helmed film and a more diverse cast. Also, Charlie's Angels is just a classic girl power movie so yay! Two, Kristen Stewart...why Kristen Stewart? Is anyone excited for her specifically? If so, can you please explain why? I only think of her as painfully awkward, the total opposite of a kickass spy femme fatale...help me see the light.
Paul Manafort, aka Collusion de Vil, Has a $15,000 Ostrich Skin Jacket, Elle. Dude. Also, "Collusion de Vil," dead. 😂
What is the QAnon conspiracy theory? CBS. Just when you think we, the American people, can't get any stupider, we top ourselves.
Hollywood’s Diversity Fail: There’s Been “No Meaningful Change” in 10 Years, Vanity Fair. But is anyone surprised? Those statistics are depressing.
Senate Bill To Require Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity Data By 2030 Census, NPR. Love the push to make everyone feel visible, but completely agree with the possible danger in less LGBTQ+ friendly areas.
500 detained fathers and sons to go on strike after being separated, The Guardian.
Financial fruit: Apple becomes 1st trillion-dollar company, AP. This blows my mind. I literally can't even fathom this much money. I'm also honestly kind of surprised it's Apple and not a company like Amazon with all it's big moves and press lately.
Ancestry, 23andMe and others say they will follow these rules when giving DNA data to businesses or police, The Washington Post. I've said before I wouldn't care because I'm not worried about committing any crimes, howevvveerr, it certainly doesn't hurt to get express permission.
Facebook finds ‘sophisticated’ efforts to disrupt elections, AP. And yet, our president keeps defending Russia...👌🏼
France Just Outlawed Catcalling, Nylon. I can't even fathom living in a country where the response can be this quick. Also, tucked away in there is a little rule that allows minors 30 years from the time they turn 18 to report a rape. That's incredible. Statute of limitations are bullshit.
U.S. states make last-minute legal bid to halt 3-D online guns, Reuters. WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE FUCK. What is fucking wrong with our society?! Seriously. Any asshole with access or enough money could get an untraceable, undetectable (by metal detectors) weapon. Where in the world would this be considered okay?! Oh, that's right, the good ol' fucking US of A. This pisses me off beyond measure. Clearly.
A judge ruled that a website has to suspend downloads for 3D gun plans. But they're already out there, CNN. Oh, what the fuck.
Hospitals know how to protect mothers. They just aren’t doing it. USA Today. This is horrifying...we just looove to parade the title "Greatest Country in the World" and we can't even keep women safe during childbirth? Come on. We're a developed country, one of THE developed countries. This is unacceptable.
Deadly riots rock Zimbabwe’s capital as vote results delayed, AP. Horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible.
Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe’s ruling party declared winner of first post-Mugabe elections, The Washington Post. And now they're waiting on international parties to give them the okay to call this a fair win.
Ahed Tamimi, Palestinian viral slap video teenager, freed in Israel, BBC. You go girl! The sheer force and courage of teens in this era is astonishing. I only wish I was as brave and socially aware and active at their age.
Saudi Arabia arrests two more women's rights activists: rights group, Reuters. But most were advocating for the right to drive...which they now have...so why the arrests?
NY Times publisher: I told Trump his attacks on the press would lead to violence, The Hill. " 'I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.' He [A.G. Sulzberger] noted that Trump’s “fake news” comments are being used by foreign "regimes to justify sweeping crackdowns on journalists,” and that the rhetoric is “putting lives at risk” and undermining democracy in the U.S." His supporters love to spout off about "freedom of speech," but they don't want the media to have that same privilege. It's a dangerous world we're moving toward, and quickly.
Les Moonves and CBS Face Allegations of Sexual Misconduct, The New Yorker. Annnd, here we are again. To add insult to injury, this cretin has been a public supporter of the #MeToo movement and was associated with the founding of the Commission on Eliminating Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace. Have you no shame?
FEMA’s top HR official allegedly hired women as sexual partners for male employees, Vox. Soooo...that's disgusting. Did no one notice the complete lack of qualifications?
Trump administration seeks to freeze gas mileage standards for new cars, ABC. Come oonnnnnn! Give the environment a goddamn chance!
Manafort trial to focus on lavish lifestyle, not collusion, AP. I don't even have anything to say about this because I'm so over hearing about this guy.
Professor forced into hiding by death threats over Brazil abortion hearing, The Guardian. “ 'It is a public health issue,” she said. “We have to use empathy. There is a big lack of this in Brazil.' ” Cue applause.
Cardinal Theodore McCarrick Resigns Amid Sexual Abuse Scandal, The New York Times. And a big ol' fuck you to you, McCarrick. Despicable.
Tokyo medical university cut women's exam scores to curb numbers, Reuters. Going to vomit, bye.
Hope grows as deadly Northern California blaze slows down, AP. It's only 5 percent contained...
Mobs of kangaroos take to streets of Australia's capital over food shortages, CNN. Ehhhhhgggghhhh, this hurt my heart.
Swedish royal jewels stolen by thieves who fled by speedboat, CNN. It's like an actual Bond movie.
Tour de France 2018: Geraint Thomas wins to make sporting history, CNN. I actually used to watch this with my dad...he loves it. 🚴
Listening
Bionic (DJ Club Remix), Eric Hayes. This is the full version of that teaser I posted about two weeks ago. So excited I actually like it as much as I thought haha, I never like faking interest in a friend's passions. It's way better when they're actually talented, like Eric.
Dope Game, Baka Not Nice.
Radio Silence, R3HAB. I 👏🏼 love 👏🏼 him 👏🏼
Movin On, GIVERS. This was just delightful.
Watching
iZombie, CW. I know, I know, not another zombie show! But stay with me here. This show was just renewed for a fifth season and I'm so pumped for another season of Liv, Ravi, Peyton, Clive and, ok, Major too. I've been binging season four on Netflix and have found myself laughing out loud at some of Rose McIver's personality interpretations. The boyfriend came home while I was watching and he even gave the casual, but resounding sign of approval when he said, "You can keep watching if you want" after the episode ended. Try. It. Out! You can blame me if you hate it.
Loving
Truth Serum, Ole Henriksen. This was the serum I mentioned a couple weeks ago, that I wanted to give a little more time to see any possible changes. I won't go into it too much because I'm going to do a product review piece on this serum, but I'm really liking it. My face has been feeling softer and smoother, plus this product is so easy to put on.
