Weekly Roundup #27: Gen Z and herpes

Here's the inside story of how police nabbed the East Area Rapist suspect, The Sacramento Bee. Investigations fascinate me. The smallest details, literally in the case of DNA, can end up blowing a whole case wide open.

The Creepy Genetics Behind the Golden State Killer Case, Wired. Personally, I'm not planning on committing any crimes, so I don't care if my DNA is in a searchable database, but when people are arrested for partial matches, only to be found innocent later? That can ruin lives.

Why is Body Positivity So F*cking Hard? Cools. It's horrible that a person can be happy with their body, but others make them end up questioning that satisfaction. If you come across someone who's confident in their body, be happy for them and, if you're not happy, find out how they got to where they are, don't tear them down for it. We all could be a little more loving to each other, and ourselves.

Instagram will filter out bullying comments, Engadget. Thank you thank you thank yooouuu! I'm so over seeing ridiculous, cruel, uneducated comments on public posts. I'm sure it won't fix everything and it's taken far too long, but I'm so glad Instagram is finally taking some control.

Disney made a jacket to simulate physical experiences, like a snake slithering across your body, The Verge. The point, however, has yet to be invented.

Netflix’s ‘remixed’ version of Arrested Development season 4 premieres May 4th, The Verge. But all I really heard was season five will be released, "Soon. Like real soon." YES! YES! YES! If you haven't seen this cult classic, stop everything and log in to your ex-boyfriend's uncle's Netflix immediately.

Your Weekend Playlist, Courtesy of Charlotte Lawrence, Milk.xyz. I love Lawrence, so I'm going to humble brag that I also have flagged more than a few of these songs for people to listen to. "Cocaine Jesus?" Yeah, I dig it.

Roll Call, Nylon. For our future's sake, so thankful for these inspiring kids.

The Dying Scientist and His Rogue Vaccine Trial, Wired. This is such a horrible, stigmatized disease. I certainly don't agree with the route William Halford used, but I appreciate his determination to find a cure.

Black men arrested at Starbucks settle for $1 and $200K youth program, ABC. Love love LOVE! Good for them for turning a shitty moment into an example and a movement forward.

MoviePass’s Unlimited-Movies Subscription is Gone — For Now, Fortune. From one movie a day to four movies a month...not nearly as appealing now.

MoviePass Revives Its Unlimited Plan, Wired. Crisis averted everyone.

Apparently, Millennials Don't Need Or Deserve Apartments With Living Rooms, Refinery29. Why don't y'all stop giving us reasons we can't afford homes or talking about our supposedly unreasonable expectations and just admit you fucked us over. We're just doing the best we can with the dumpster fire left to us.

ABBA Reunite, Announce Two New Songs, Variety. As this group is one of the few my dad actually likes for whatever reason, this is my childhood right here and I'm pumped for some more music.

Shallou's Nomad Series Shines Light on Environmental Awareness, Milk.xyz. Shallou + environmentalism? Sign me up.

Australia announces $379 million funding for Great Barrier Reef, Reuters. 🙏🏼 Now let's get to solving that pesky little climate change issue.

Nobel literature prize will not be awarded this year, AP. "On the grounds that the academy is in no shape to pick a winner after a string of sex abuse allegations and financial crimes scandals." *cue eye roll so large eyes get stuck backwards

'Teachers' Spring' forcing lawmakers to find money for schools, Reuters. I've said it before—teachers 👏🏼 deserve 👏🏼 more 👏🏼 money 👏🏼👏🏼 (and support, funding, supplies, you get it).

Stephen Hawking's final theory sheds light on the multiverse, The Guardian. Still sharing his genius from beyond the grave.

Hawaii volcano shoots lava into sky; evacuations ordered, ABC. Basically they don't know how long it could go for or where it could go sooo that's scary.

There Is Only One Thing IMHO Can Mean, The Atlantic. I thought it was "honest," IMHO...

India backs down over plan to ban journalists for 'fake news,' The Guardian. That this is even a threat because of the pervasiveness of "fake news" is terrifying.

132-pound ovarian tumor removed from Connecticut woman, CNN. I am horrified...HOW? How does it get to this point??

Data firm at center of Facebook privacy scandal will close, ABC. Ha, good!

China province tries spraying and publicly shaming jaywalkers to deter them, ABC. "It takes pictures of the jaywalkers and displays the photos, along with the people's names, on huge LED displays on the street in an effort to shame them, the Beijing News says." That's amazing. Wouldn't stop New Yorkers, but who knows, maybe the Chinese are more susceptible to shaming.

21 Wholesome Parents Who Will Make You Want To Text Your Fam Immediately, Buzzfeed. My friend's parents are in this list, the parents who wait at airport security. Dying.

Fatal police shootings of unarmed people have significantly declined, experts say, The Washington Post. I'd be happier if that number were zero. Plus, the significant number of deaths have occurred after this point in the year. There have been 18 fatal shootings so far this year and there were 22 at this time in 2016 and 26 last year. 2016 ended with 51 deaths, last year there were 68. So we're not doing too much better yet. I'd say "significantly declined" is an overstatement.

Illnesses from ticks, mosquitoes, flea bites have tripled in recent years, CDC says, CBS. Warmer temperatures, aka climate change. I don't care what Lyle Petersen refuses to say.

Research Shows a Simple Way to Increase Your Engagement at Work, Harvard Business Review.

What Kanye West Said About Slavery, Obama and Mental Health in His New Interviews, The New York Times. "It feels like Kanye West hasn’t stopped talking in weeks." Yes, yes, it does. Any chance of shutting the fuck up sometime soon? I've never liked him. I've always thought he was a pompous asshat. This has only exacerbated my opinion of him. He's a ridiculous human.

Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby Booted From Film Academy, The Hollywood Reporter. Byyeee!

Charlie Rose’s misconduct was widespread at CBS and three managers were warned, investigation finds, The Washington Post. In other nasty old man and his enablers news.

Time's Up Joins Call To Shut Down R. Kelly, NPR. 'Bout time.

The Questions Mueller Wants to Ask Trump About Obstruction, and What They Mean, The New York Times. That's a lot of questions...

Trump Orders Pentagon to Consider Reducing U.S. Forces in South Korea, The New York Times. Maybe I'm embarrassing myself here, but I honestly didn't know we'd had a significant number of troops there since the 50s. If you're like me, read this for more info you probably didn't know (spoiler alert: It's a tad depressing).

Trump’s new ‘Stormy’ story clashes with earlier statements, AP. "Perfectly legal," yes, yes, I'm sure it was.

Exclusive: Bornstein claims Trump dictated the glowing health letter, CNN. L. O. L. As if that wasn't clear from the terminology used. "Healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency?" Just looking at the most recent years...have you seen Obama?

Giuliani outlines conditions of a potential Trump-Mueller interview, CNN. "It would need to be no longer than "two to three hours" of questioning based on 'a narrow set of questions.' " aka, DO NOT LET HIM SPEAK ON THE FLY.

Who is Emmet Flood, Trump's new Russia probe lawyer? Politico. He notably represented Bill Clinton during his impeachment proceedings. Hmm...

CDC director asks for salary reduction after questions raised, The Hill. But from $375,000 to what?

Correspondents group criticizes comedian Michelle Wolf for remarks at annual dinner, NBC. I mean...the truth hurts?

Kim Jong Un Pledges To Shut Down Main Nuclear Test Site In May, South Korea Says, NPR. We'll see, we'll see.

Caravan of migrants reaches US border, temporarily turned away by Border Patrol, ABC. I can't imagine that uncertainty.

Trump threatens government shutdown in September if no funding for wall, Reuters. Aka the third one this year...

Twin bombings in Afghanistan kill 25, including 9 reporters, AP. Including 11 children.

House Republicans release redacted Russia report, CNN. " 'We found no evidence of collusion, and so we found perhaps some bad judgment, inappropriate meetings,' Conaway said when they submitted their report for declassification." Uh huh.

Listening

Lucid Dreams, Juicy WRLD.

Too Many Colors, Twin Shadow.

Touchscreen Navigation, Rae Sremmurd.

4Ever, Clairo.

Sleep, Hatchie. This song makes me think of the end of an eclectic indie film, when the main character(s) frolic away on a summer day, in a green meadow dotted with wildflowers, and you know they're going to be happy (for the immediate future ha).

Watching

Game of Thrones, HBO. The bf hasn't seen any of this show, so naturally I've been begging him to watch it for over two years now. Finally, this weekend I managed to drag him around, so we're officially into Season 1 and I'm pumped. His status is still wary.
