Weekly Roundup #17: Student activists and indicted Russians

Weekly Roundup #17: Student activists and indicted Russians

Reading

Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough.

The Red Queen, Philippa Gregory. If you haven't read one of Gregory's books, I highly recommend all of them. Maybe start with best-known, and one of my favorites, The Other Boleyn Girl .

What I Saw Treating the Victims From Parkland Should Change the Debate on Guns, The Atlantic. No matter your thoughts on gun rights, this is a medical standpoint that should give you something to think about. The writer is a radiologist who gives a description of the types of injuries seen from different types of guns.

Emma González Leads a Student Outcry on Guns: ‘This Is the Way I Have to Grieve,’ The New York Times.

Trump’s Empathy Cheat Sheet Demonstrates What Kind Of Man He Really Is, Nylon. I'm actually speechless. You really need a reminder to say "I hear you??"

People with depression use language differently – here’s how to spot it, The Conversation. "Researchers have reported that pronouns are actually more reliable in identifying depression than negative emotion words." Also, "absolutist words" like always and never, which makes sense to me. This is an interesting look at how depressed people may see the world differently and it's so important to have the tools to hopefully spot signs.

What Ever Happened To Brendan Fraser?, GQ. Fraser was in so many movies from my childhood. Only a few years ago I randomly thought of him and was sad he wasn't seen anymore. I'm glad he's getting another chance to act, in a more serious role than another wide-eyed sheltered man-child too.

Special counsel Mueller indicts 13 Russians with interfering in 2016 U.S.election, NBC. The fact that this was even possible is infuriating, and the fact that these people are being charged as Russia is currently interfering in midterm elections is absolutely unacceptable. I'm so disgusted. At this point, we should just all use paper ballots at midterms.

What's Actually Behind Cape Town's Water Crisis, The Atlantic. So corruption and class, race, wealth inequality...is anyone surprised now?

The Songs That Bind, New York Times. I was fully expecting to laugh at this article, after all, my music tastes have evolved greatly since I was a mere 13. But a simple Google search was all it took to prove me wrong...I do still love "Grind With Me" by Pretty Ricky. And I still get pumped to sing every word to Fall Out Boy's "Sugar, We're Goin Down" and 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" (throwback to dances in the cafeteria with the latter).

Who's Missing From America's Colleges? Rural High School Graduates, NPR. You forgot just how different rural American is from urban and suburban.

Behind the scenes with Black Panther’s makeup designer, The Verge. I just think stuff is so cool and I loved reading about how important keeping true to tradition and culture was for the makeup, prosthetics, etc.

NRA Boycott: Full List of Companies That Cut Ties With Gun Lobby Over Florida Shooting, Newsweek. We see you car rental companies (why did so many even have relationships with the NRA?).

Facebook Sees Its Gen Z Audience Slipping Away to Snapchat, AdAge. I definitely could have predicted the loss of young Facebook users, it's already happened. But to Snapchat? Not with its new update...

Why It's so Hard to Actually Work in Shared Offices, The Walrus. I work in an open plan office and it's definitely brighter and more appealing to look at than a bunch of gray cubicles. However, it's hard to not get distracted by the multiple conversations happening around me. At least generally these conversations are applicable to me or my work, I would think it'd be even more difficult when sharing space with multiple companies.

Newsweek publishes critical piece on company after staffers threaten to resign, CNN. So many props to those employees who risked their jobs to uphold their journalistic integrity.

Weekend Box Office: 'Black Panther' Bounds to Record-Shattering $235M-Plus Bow, The Hollywood Reporter. Bravo!

Dude makes 'why you should swipe right' PowerPoint for his Tinder and it worked, Mashable. Always stand out from the crowd.

This is the real reason many Americans stay poor, MarketWatch. Speaking as a young adult who always been a saver, but has been completely unable to actually save any significant amount due to necessary spending...yeah. This makes sense.

Janelle Monáe Stars in "Noir Town," Directed by Jordan Peele, W Magazine. Love the cross-collaboration, also the new definition of a "Hitchcock hero." Bless you, Jordan Peele.

Boston Dynamics is teaching its robot dog to fight back against humans, The Guardian. But, I don't understand why...why would they need to "fight back?" They're teaching it to get inside when a human is trying to close a door on them. Shouldn't they stay out if the human is trying to keep them out? That's just asking for it to learn aggression, like the poor dogs forced into fighting, but with AI...

Court Finds John Oliver Has the Right to Hire a Giant Squirrel Named “Mr. Nutterbutter” to Insult Coal Barons, Slate. I chuckled at this, and then was disgusted by this: "Lawyers for Murray, whose company lost six miners and three rescue workers in the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse, said in their initial complaint that 'nothing has ever stressed him more' than the Last Week Tonight segment." Really, nothing?

Treatment against peanut allergy protected kids in new study, NBC.

In SimpleReach's newsletter, they talked about how Mastercard just launched a series of in-house content studios called Storylabs, which will publish blog posts, social content, podcasts, and videos in an effort to build and engage audiences. They're following in the footsteps of Marriott, Pepsi, United Airlines and Walmart. This is just another company attempting to reach consumers (and more) with more than just a well-thought out ad, Marriott has been particularly successful. Companies are realizing they have to be everywhere to really catch attention these days. It's a little scary to think about where the future of this is headed...

Bloomberg Created a Video Game to Document the Demise of the American Shopping Mall, Adweek. In the same vein, publishers are placing more emphasis on tech to boost engagement and time spent on a site or page.

Kylie Jenner: Snapchat is "so sad," CBS. And around the world, all you could hear were the sounds of little stocks dropping.

24 Tweets By Women That Are All Funny, No Filler And Guaranteed To Make You Laugh, Buzzfeed. If anyone needs a laugh.

Listening

Heaven, Kane Brown. Every year, as it gets warmer, my need for a little country increases.

For Your Love, The Yardbirds. Listening to some oldies, but goodies.

Watching

Black Panther, Marvel. This was beautifully done and the technology in this film (aka the visual affects faking it) blew my mind. There's one moment, at the beginning, during a traditional ceremony where all the Wakanda tribes are dancing and singing, all in customary garb, and it was stunning. I actually got chills. I highly recommend this movie. However, I will say, one friend who is actually a huge fan of the whole Marvel universe thought it was great, but didn't live up to the hype. He also thought it could've come out after Avengers: Infinity War, soo if that means anything to you great, if not, we're on the same page.
