Weekly Roundup #47: Zoë and sex math
Reading
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, J.K. Rowling.
Pop Goes the Weasel, M.J. Arlidge.
The Millennial 100, Rolling Stone. I meant to read this last week, but got too busy. Just scroll through. There’s so much to dissect here.
Why Zoe Kravitz Wanted to Be Naked on the Cover of Rolling Stone, Rolling Stone. I LOVE HER. That is all. Oh, except, her and her mom’s definitions of “hot” 30 years apart…😭❤️
Psychedelic psilocybin therapy for depression granted Breakthrough Therapy status by FDA, New Atlas, My friend, who is getting her PhD in this field, sent me this article recently. Do I want to take mushrooms? Debatable. Am I very here for anything that can possibly alleviate the symptoms of depression? A thousand times YES.
Divorce, Ghosts and Macro-Doses: How Elle King Got Her Groove Back, Rolling Stone. “ ‘It’s about taking your power back,’ says King of the song. ‘Taking back power [for] women being sexualized in a negative way, when women are just trying to fucking go out there and work and take control of their lives… When you’re talking about the #MeToo movement, I think that it’s not just women. I think that for men as well, it’s [about] finding your power and sexuality. Take control of your body!’ ” 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 Elle King just seems like a babe I’d want to be friends with. Also, umm, Rob Schneider is her dad??
The 5 Step Beginner’s Skincare Routine to Kick Your Skin Into Gear, Milk.xyz. I love stories like this. I am constantly preaching the importance of skin care on this site, but if you do it in the wrong order, you might as well throw all those products out the window. Just kidding, but they definitely won’t be as effective, if at all. Toner over a night cream? Girl, please.
Going Viral, Eater. This is fascinating, and gross. “ ‘I actually don't know if any dish that I created has not gone viral,’ [Jared] Zuckerman says.” Ew. “But is paying for a chance to go viral ‘cheating?’ Chefs like Lemoine contend that hiring professionals gives restaurants a competitive edge, and is therefore becoming industry standard. ‘It's part of doing business in New York City,’ Lemoine says. ‘In today's day and age, you have to be able to reach the audiences that you need to survive. We have to use the tools that we have at our disposal.’ “ I hate that this is officially a thing. Although, I kinda really could go for a Dragon Egg right now. By the way, this is a hefty read, but I highly recommend setting aside the time for it. Otherwise, just skip right to the tips for taking a viral photo. Up to you. 🤷🏼♀️
Rock Revivalists Greta Van Fleet on Their Quest for ‘Musical Honesty,’ Rolling Stone. “ ‘That’s the thing that destroys a lot of good art now: chasing trends,’ the guitarist [Jake Kiszka] says.” And then my favorite bit from this article, because it’s so painfully true: “ ‘That’s why it’s difficult in our world to cut through. When you are doing something truthful, it’s easy for someone to say, ‘That sounds like this band from the Sixties and Seventies. It’s the throwback sound.’ In that response is the answer: That is because music meant something during that period — a lot more than it does now. It was done by the artist for the artist. It was music for the people.’ [Jake says.]” Ugh, so true and it hurts my heart.
Chrissy Teigen Wants You To Eat and Look Good This Thanksgiving, Elle. Chrissy, can we be friends? I, too, love being comfy over anything. Also, I can’t wait to see their (specifically John’s) Halloween costume now.
Becoming a “Time Realist” Was Annoying But Enlightening, Man Repeller. I’m definitely a time-optimist and I definitely couldn’t do this time diary stuff.
6 Things Real Hairstylists Would Never Do to Their Own Hair, PureWow. Ok, sorry, but my hair would be a frizzy, fuzzy disaster if I brushed it out sooo gotta say “uh…NAH” to #1.

The Myth of Whiteness in Classical Sculpture, The New Yorker. Basically we’ve whitewashed all of history, which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, unfortunately. All these solid white statues we think we know were once covered in vibrant shades.
17 Times Pixar Movies Were Even Smarter Than You Thought They Were, Buzzfeed. PIXAR IS THE BEST!!
100 Websites That Shaped the Internet as We Know It, Gizmodo. Ah, Ask Jeeves. What a throwback. Omg, wait, CHATROULETTE! How horrifying that we used that for fun back in the day! And Homestar Runner, ahhhh, now that’s a throwback!
Life After College is Weird. This Can Help. The New York Times. This should really just say “life in your twenties is weird, good luck.”

SweetWater 420 Fest Announces Initial 2019 Artist Lineup, Live for Live Music. I would like to go please.
The Scariest Movies Ever Made, According to the Wikipedia Plot Summaries I Read Instead of Watching Them, The Muse. Ahhhh, I do this! I HATE horror movies, but I’m interested in the story so I always make friends summarize them for me or read the plot myself. I was getting scared just reading the brief plot points in this article, so clearly the movies aren’t for me.
Is Your Date a Good Person? Try This 30-Second Trick to Find Out, PureWow. Speaking as a former server and, you know, a human, this 👏🏼 is 👏🏼 so 👏🏼 true!
Why Hasn't The “Fenty Effect” Hit K-Beauty? Refinery29. This is so true and I never realized because I have fair skin. Is it because many Asians seem to have lighter skin? Apparently…”Korea accounts for 18% of global sales of skin whiteners.” Did not know this was still a thing. Ew. Anyway, three cheers for brands like Thrive Causemetics and Kaja, who recognize the importance of creating a vast range of shades.
We Did the Sex Math on John Mayer, The Cut. This does not shock me whatsoever. Also, I used to hate him, I really thought he was the douchiest creep. But now, I have to say, his self-deprecating humor is really beginning to change my mind.
21 Unintentionally Hilarious Knock-Off Halloween Costumes That Are Just MAYBE Better Than The Real Thing, Buzzfeed. “Pubescent Frog of Silent War” FOR THE WIN!

The Complicated Case Of Beauty Dupes, Nylon. I’ll save you the read. “Therefore, the beauty dupe is something to be embraced.”
Listening
Waiting, Picturesque. There was a guy standing next to me on the PATH and he was full on silently singing and head-bopping so, finally, I asked him, what are you listening to because it looks like you’re really enjoying it? Hence my foray into the band Picturesque’s library.
Sheep, Mt. Joy. Matt Quinn’s voice is just infectious. I think this group would be fantastic live annd they’re touring with RKS sooo, yeah…I’ll see y’all in February.
Growing Pains, COIN. This song just makes me happy and I can’t help but do a little seat dancing whenever it comes on while I’m at work.
Loud Magic, Foreign Air.
Kansas City, The Mowgli’s.
Warm Blood, flor. Always a hit for me. If you haven’t listened to flor already, get on that! I saw them at Firefly this past June and they did not disappoint.
Better, Khalid. Can Khalid do any wrong? I think not. Don’t @ me on this, people.
Sweet but Psycho, Ava Max.
Watching
Riverdale, CW. I wish these actors were all a little older (minus, Cole Sprouse—you’re fine, boo) because I feel a little silly admiring their beauty every episode. That said, I’m finally back to watching season 2 and I just love the ridiculous, but dark, plot line. Betty’s tortured plot line? God, Lili Reinhart is SO good.
We Fooled the Internet w/ Fake Justin Bieber Burrito Photo, Yes Theory. This is incredible and also, pretty scary. Just a reminder to not believe everything you see.
Loving
Murder mystery dinners. Yup. I’ve wanted to do one forever and finally got to, while on a boat, which was even more awesome. Oh, and I got to play the mistress, Ida Ho (natch). I may have only guessed one of the two murderers correctly, but I did win an award for my acting (that baby’s goin’ on the mantle). So, yeah, it was a good night.
